My boy has recently got his head round reading to the extent that he’s happy to disappear off and put his head in a book. Mostly though it tends to be non-fiction, reference books about dinosaurs or machines or something. Whilst a bit of me is bursting with pride at my mini-geek, he’d probably be a bit more rounded as an individual if he read some narrative from time to time!

He’s quite happy to have Roald Dahl, David Walliams etc read to him, but doesn’t seem to want to read on by himself. As a kid, I remember getting a book called “50 short adventure and war stories for boys” or something along those lines. Is there a modern equivalent that anyone could recommend?

My 7 year old went through a series of books “Stories for 6 years olds” and “Stories for 7 years olds”.
He devours “Beastquest” books from school on a daily basis.
I think he’s read the Roald Dahl books, he loves Famous Five and Secret Seven too. (not really modern equivalent)
I started reading the first Harry Potter book to him a few weeks ago. We’re still going, chapter-by-chapter but he’s racing ahead and is halfway through the 6th one.

Considering he’s normally a livewire, reading is the one thing that calms him down so we let him get on with it.

Mine’s on How to Train Your Dragon and I’m hoping he might have a stab at Terry Pratchett’s Strata soonish

reference books about dinosaurs or machines or something

Dinosaur Cove – brilliant books, 70+ pages long, simple enough prose and lots of excellent illustrations
Astrosaurs – a silly series of “dinosaurs in space” stories
    Mr Crookodile
    Spy Dog series
The Elf Girl and Raven Boy series

    Cows in Action series

    Stan Stinky

… and many others I can vouch for.

A lot of the boys I teach like to read the Tom Gates books.

How to train your dragon is brilliant and wasted on kids. Keep it for yourself.

None year old here and it’s Percy Jackson at the moment.

At 7? Diary of a wimpy kid was popular as I recall
