I did a few weeks in Bovec in 2005, in that area/valley there was a bit of XC but nothing like I’d expect the STW bunch to like, very little that was more than 20km long and most of those were out-and-back routes. Lovely place, amazing views but certainly didnt seem set up for XC when we went. The DH was great fun, more technical than some other alpine resorts seem to be. Most of the XC stuff was also walking route, with nice long swingy bridges etc…
Walked, not biked in Slovenia, lovely place and quiet cheap when i was there in 2006. Areas to consider are Bovec/Kransjka Gora in the north west, and apparantley there is some stuff in the north east in Maribor.
Wouldnt say it’s not set up for MTB TJ, seemed quite MTB friendly to me, just primarily DH and “girly” XC. There were lots of boardwalk DH routes etc through the mountains etc, it just wasnt pushed as a major thing. No bike shops that I saw, very little in the way of hiring etc. But then there were only 2 rafting companies and 4 bars open when we went – it was very quiet (lovely!). It seemed to say “theres MTBing to be done, enjoy it, but we dont provide anything other than trails” – which is fine by me.
Coffeking – not my impression. I thought that the footpaths were all out of bounds for MTBs – so its only specific bike parks or gravel roads. Certainly the impression I got. I was walking tho – and saw no XC mtbing at all in the sense I know it
Then we went to the mtbpark place near Prevalje, but just used it as a B+B. Very good hospitality. They just gave us some routes, and we just used GPS to double check that we hadn’t strayed off course. Definitely recommend the underground MTBing thru the mines at Mezica (take a jacket – it’s chilly down there). http://www.mtbpark.com/index.php?stran=hotel&lang=en
For the German stuff, I had no problems, because I live/work there, but babelfish can help.
Thats where I saw it! I knew I had read about biking in Slovenia but couldnt find it…will be into the loft tonight for my old copies of Singletrack 🙂 thanks Dave
