Hi all. I’m looking for some advice regarding using a 12 speed Shimano double chainset (M8100) with 11 speed (M8000) everything else, and 11 speed chain. Has anyone tried anything like this and does it work? The 12 speed chainset is about £50 cheaper for some reason.

I’ve tried searching, but the answers seem to be mixed.

    Cheers

Are you planning to run 2×11 or just 1x?

    I’ll be running it 2x, probably 26/36.

Whenever we’ve tried to mix chainring speeds etc at work (due to the current lack of stock) it usually ends up in a frustrating effort trying to get the front shifting working well.

It may work fine though.. your gamble to take

In theory, yes. In practice, maybe.

Unlikely to work. The new shimano 12 speed tooth profile is quite different to 11 speed. I dont think the 11sp chain will mesh well with the 12sp chainrings.

e.g. I was trying to do the opposite to you. 12speed shimano everything, but 11 speed chainring. My 12sp shimano chain doesnt work well with 11 speed chainrings (I got lucky with a burgtec one, but it doesnt work on blackspire or AB). So I assume, you will have the same issue. But maybe it’s fine the other way around??

Thanks for the replies everyone. I’m going to bite the bullet and go for 11 speed all round, I think. Seems safer.

    Cheers
