I have a Genesis IO 725 frame which is used just for commuting all year round. Noticed quite a lot of rust build up on the Chainstay bridge around the joints with the chainstay and also around the air hole in the chainstay bridge. I was just wondereing whats the best approach to deal with this, or is it too late to deal with? Was thinking of a respray would sand blasting / dipping get rid of this? Its difficult to know how deep the rust is etc. Any advice would be much appreciate. Its only a cheapish frame so not the end of the world but pointless if I get it resprayed if the frame is on the way out. Its about 8 years old or so and used quite alot.
Rust never worries me, my commuter is 30+ years old and lives outside. Steel frame can and do rust through, but it's rarer than you'd worry about. I've never treated any of my steel frames.
There's a few options,
1) Clean it and treat the frame with waxoyl, framesaver or similar.
2) Have it resprayed by someone who can apply a rust poof coating by dipping the frame before they paint it. It's usual a solution which leaves a dark to black coating on the steel, although there's probably other ways of doing it. There's a few that do that, otherwise you're left with treating it yourself as 1.
Unless you can see some serious rust I'd not worry to much. That's not guaranteeing it won't fail catastrophically form the inside tomorrow, but there's nothing you can do about it so why worry!
You will get rust on these sort of points on a steel frame. Suggest you rub it down to clean it off, as it's most likely just on the surface. You can treat it with rust remedy to prevent it coming back but this discolours the frame to a dark blue which may affect the finish if you want to respray it. Had lots of steel frames, they all rust but never known it to be more than cosmetic. I do tend to treat the inside with waxoyl though
