29er. For road touring duties. Schwalbe Big Apples seem to be replaced? Any other options?

The big apple replacement is the g-one speed

You're going to struggle to find something appropriate for that size of rim

generally you need to go wider than the internal rim - so 45c tyre as a minimum. shouldn't be too difficult.

I've got 1.75" (i.e. 47mm) Marathon Mondials and there's no way I'd use them on a Scraper. There is a 2.0" version (50mm) but even then.....

Schwalbe supermotos if you can get em.

It's not that difficult. There's rumour of some panaracers in the new year too.

https://www.sjscycles.co.uk/tyres/0-schwalbe-marathon-almotion-tubeless-easy-hs453-folding-tyre-700-x-38-40622/ look a good bet if 2.0" tyres are ok on those rims.

Or http://nextdaytyres.co.uk/details.aspx/SCHWALBE-G-ONE-SPEED-GRAVEL-MTB-29/2006

Marathon Supreme is another option http://nextdaytyres.co.uk/details.aspx/SCHWALBE-MARATHON-SUPREME-MTB-29/1916

There are some cheap balloon tyres at PX, including Big Apples...

Pretty tempted by the Almotions myself at SJS at their price, they are good for the SV19A tubes too (although I'm getting increasingly tempted to try tubeless), even though they charge ~£4 delivery.

I thought I'd get away with the sizing. Have run a WTB Breakout 2.3 tubeless on a Easton Arc internal of 45mm. Zero issues. The G One Speed is 2.35. I'd like a second wheelset but I'd be into new cassette and I'm 11-46 so too expensive for occasional use and I'm not swapping cassettes every time.

Now that Maxxis looks like what I'm after. 🙂 how do you find them on the tarmac? Cope with the Fred Whitton without an unacceptable amount of drag?

Those images were the examples I could think of on wider rims. I've got mine on MTX33s and they dwarf the rims.

I run them around 30-35 psi and they roll & grip nicely. Certainly better than the Halo Twin Rails they replaced 🙂

If it helps, on my MTX33s the Grifters measure 64mm wide, so a proper 2.5".

Ton, that top picture I posted is how it looks on an 80mm wide rim.

@ ton. Have you used the JJ+ for road rides? How do you find it? I'm specifically interested in how it performs at 80+ miles and centuries. I'm not bothered about short sharp turn of speed road blasts on it. These road rides would be occasional for me. 4 times a year perhaps.

That maxxis is a 60tpi casing and weighs almoat as much as an enduro tyre (granted it looks cool though if that counts for anything), i bet the ikon rolls faster.
For doing road events i really doubt you'll find anything better than the g-one speed tubeless

Lotto, I'm also interested in ton's take on the plus on road, fwiw I've used a std steel Jones on road for 100+ at a time, on 30mm rims and 2" big apples. No problems. It's a bit steamroller-like and not great if you have a head wind, but feels good generally. Just get a light casing tyre rather than anything built tough.
