Breaker one-nine, this here’s the Rubber Duck

My dad was a truck driver of boring UK trucks when me and my brother were young. For one of our birthdays he hired Convoy from the local VHS shop as a treat as we were absolutely mad about American trucks. It’s been my favourite film ever since (even though as an adult I acknowledge it’s pretty bad). Anyway my hero has died.

    RIP Kris Kristofferson.

Heavens Gate is an amazing film no matter what the experts say.

Man was a legend, amazing what he crammed into 88 years, and was unbelievably talented in whatever he did, always remember him with Sinead O’Connor in front of a hostile crowd after the church thing, and of course all the 70s movies he did, and later stuff as well such as Blade, music was his thing though, and you can tell by how nobody had a bad word about him what he was like.

    Fun fact about Convoy.

The ‘long-haired friends of Jesus’ in the VW bus were his touring band. I think the story goes that they had to pause filming because he was on tour but came back to film that segment with the whole band.

Oh, that’s sad. Had no idea he was in the convoy film, but recall being very moved by a performance years ago – might have been Heaven’s Gate, which I thought was a great film. Yeah, legend. RIP

Can anyone remember which movie he was in, he was driving a convertible and he picked up a hitchhiker, a young lass, and one of the things he said to her was “hell I’ve got socks that’s older than you”
It really tickled me, but I can’t remember which movie it was.

Convoy is one of my favourite ‘comfort’ films, loved it since I was a kid. Radio got cranked up when they played CW McCall this morning!  He was great as Whistler in the Blade films too. RIP

Had The Highwaymen playing in the car this morning.  As already said….  only Willie left now and he is 91.

Never really liked his style of music, but I had a lot of admiration for him sticking up for Sinead at that time.

Took me a while to realise what this thread (title) was about even though I had seen the news of his passing

Bloke was a bona fide genius song writer.

    A very middling actor

    Helicopter pilot in the army

    Rhodes Scholar at Oxford

He was also married to Rita Coolridge for a while…

    Not a bad life!

I haven’t seen Convoy since I was a kid but wasn’t that Ali McGraw driving the E-type convertible?

I don’t ’think’ so, but it is possible I’ve got it wrong and it wasn’t even KK.
have tried googling, to no avail.

I love this vid… hosted by Weylon Jennings I think?

It cracks me up when he calls a bunch of the more conservative ‘country’ guitarists “a sorry looking bunch”…

    RIP

    Sounds about right…

Apparently he had a bit of a ding-dong with Toby Keith at a big do, i think it was one of Willie Nelsons birthday bashes…

“Up from the basement came one of country music’s brightest stars (who shall remain nameless). At that moment in time, the Star had a monster radio hit about bombing America’s enemies back into the Stone Age.

“Happy birthday,” the Star said to Willie, breezing by us. As he passed Kristofferson in one long, confident stride, out of the corner of his mouth came “None of that lefty shit out there tonight, Kris.”

“What the f-ck did you just say to me?” Kris growled, stepping forward.

“You heard me,” the Star said, walking away in the darkness.

“Don’t turn your back to me, boy,” Kristofferson shouted, not giving a s-it that basically the entire music industry seemed to be flanking him.

“You ever worn your country’s uniform?” Kris asked rhetorically.

    “What?”

“Don’t ‘What?’ me, boy! You heard the question. You just don’t like the answer.” He paused just long enough to get a full chest of air. “I asked, ‘Have you ever served your country?’ The answer is, no, you have not. Have you ever killed another man? Huh? Have you ever taken another man’s life and then cashed the check your country gave you for doing it? No, you have not. So shut the f-ck up!” I could feel his body pulsing with anger next to me. “You don’t know what the hell you are talking about!”

    “Whatever,” the young Star muttered.

Kristofferson took a deep inhale and leaned against the wall, still vibrating with adrenaline. He looked over at Willie as if to say, “Don’t say a word.” Then his eyes found me. “You know what Waylon Jennings said about guys like him?” he whispered.

    I shook my head.

“They’re doin’ to country music what pantyhose did to finger-f-ckin’.”

    What a legend!
