Could anybody give me an idea of the cost of a plumber to do this.
    Many thanks

I did out myself a few months back.

    Went by YouTube videos. 😀

If I can do it anyone can.

    It’s a piece of piss.
    Plenty of online tutorials.
Did one a while back, took maybe ten minutes.

Top tip – go to a plumbers merchants and buy a really good one.
Saves you fitting one from a DIY shed and then having to replace it 6 months later when it too fails. 👿
    False economy and all that.

Straight forward. I replaced the lot converting the flush handle to a ‘light’ touch type, so you can flush with one finger. Simple job.

When I replaced the flush valve on my throne a couple of years ago, the good folks of STW recommended Fluidmaster. It’s loads better than the one it replaced, dead quiet and fills in seconds.

So assuming the same wisdom to hold true in the heady world of syphons, maybe this?

Yes fit a decent one it will last years. The diy sheds can last 1 week..and then blame you for incorrect fitting. False economy, good plumbers merchants only stock decent stuff that does not get returned.

Blimey changing a syphon in a close coupled cistern in 10 minutes is impressive, not sure I’ve ever done one in that time.

Second the Fluidmaster option if you are changing to a flush valve, if keeping a syphon go for a Dudley Turbo adjustable.

I’m another learned how on YouTube advocate and if you take it steady, aren’t hamfisted (or trying to do it in less than ten minutes) you should be ok 🙂

I was actually quite disappointed in some ways how easy it was once i’d finished but was very ginger tightening some of the fixings.

    Slight hijack…

Anyone recognise this and can recommend a replacement part please? It’s a pull up knob (oooeeerr) flush. Looks a bit shit but it’s always been like that courtesy of pre Brexit French plumbing 🙂

But you know, ten minutes in the figurative sense 😉

Yes DIY job, changed one of ours a few weeks ago with one of these Fluidmasters for £12:
    https://www.screwfix.com/p/fluidmaster-push-button-cable-dual-flush-valve/51173
Works much better and doesn’t leak and continuously try and fill itself as it did before.
Not 10 mins, more like 30 mins as bog is close coupled and had to take apart for the new doughnut and screw in bit.

The Fluidmaster Ultra Syphon will beat the DudleyTurbo, Its more compact, more adjustable and will fit almost any system.

Toilet spam! A new low 🙁

It does look very sexy though. There’s nothing wrong with our existing fittings, but I’m tempted… Liking the naming conventions, it’s bit like buying a caravan called a Marauder.

The Dudley Turbo sounds kind of old skool. Like a Bentley or something, the whole Ultra Syphon thing is a little bit more of a high tec vibe, Ausflüsche dürch Technik sort of thing. The go-faster – flush-faster – green stripe is a nice touch. I’m thinking a glass cistern with carbon fibre lid so folk can admire the inner workings.

Good idea, i`ll run it past the guys in product development

Fluidmaster here too. I managed it easily enough and I’m pretty cack-handed at DIY.

I went for one of the packs containing a dual flush valve and bottom-entry fill valve.

Big step up from the old ballcock system. Now much easier for kids to flush and the fill-valve is much faster and quieter.

If you like a ballcock, you’ll love bottom-entry.

While you are at it, how about an elegant free-standing Wash Tower bidet:

Going back to the OP’s question – depending on toilet it should just be an hour’s labour plus parts, so about £50-70 plus £20 for new syphon.

Problem with forums is that everyone’s an expert and will say you can do it yourself following youtube and if you don’t you’re not a real man.

…and you can..as long as you have the tools to cut off the seized wing nuts, a replacement doughnut washer that fits, tape for sealing joints, silicon etc…oh and helps that the plumbing supply place is open on Sat pm and that the previous owner hasn’t boxed in (and tiled over) the isolation valve to the toilet…so you have to turn the water off to the whole house for two days while you get stuck into the above..

Other than that, it was easy 🙂

And who the hell invented the syphon where you have to take the whole cistern off the wall just to change a rubber diaphragm 👿

I’ve been putting off replaceing mine for 8 years now. Not sure I can stretch it out much longer.

Anybody got anything helpful to say about my French siphon/pull up thingy? The black bit gets pulled up which let’s the water flush out. It doesn’t always drop fully back in place which means the refill water goes straight down the pan.

Not sure there are a couple of websites that have lots of toilet spares.

Lunns is one if you google them.

Toiletspares.co.uk is the other I think.

Not sure if they would have anything like that though.

Can you not fit a standard flush valve? Is there a hole in the cistern lid to fit a button?
