    5 front rings sounds like a winner though. Combine it with 12x at the rear, one of those 2x freehubs and you’ve got 120 gears

    Three speed Sturmey-Archer rear hub and 11 speed cassette, plus 5 front rings would give you 165 gears.

    He’s way behind the times, every single abused/unloved catalogue Xmas bike the kids run around on already have that chain system
