Looking at buying an Arkose Alfine frame as a stopgap due to one of my other bikes getting tired, with a view to running it geared (2×11) and having the option of single speeding it for the winter when funds allow for replacement…….

Is it possible to run the alfine version geared? I take it there is sufficient cable stops for a rear mech cable and front mech cabling?

What else would I need? Extra dropout etc?

Can anyone recommend me some  decent cheapish  road slicks to try on my 2017 arkose  2  please – 25mm ? 28mm?  should i use inner Tubes,and at what pressure?

I am looking to try and up my speed on the tarmac ,and it’s still on the  kenda  35mm gravel tyres it came with which are rated at 50psi max.

I’m  an off roader at heart and know nothing about road bikes /road tyres and appreciate that it may ? be the wrong bike for high road speeds, but I want to get out on the roads with a few lads from work who are on proper road bikes so I want to give myself the best possible chance of keeping up . Thanks.

I’ve had Hutchinson Sector 28s tubeless on my Arkose 3 (wtb rims) without any issues.

I’ve been using Panaracer Gravel King slicks in either 32c or 28c on my Arkose for road duties. Not marked as tubeless ready but have been perfect.

Ordered my Arkose 4 on the CTW scheme….. Can’t wait until it comes in July!

I’ve read so many things about gravel bikes, compared so many products… and now I’ve finally settled on the Arkose 4! It’s such a lovely bike, the perfect mix between design (<3), specs & functionality.

Now I want to order it asap, but I’m totally stuck in the process of choosing the right size for me.

I’m 187cm, inseam of 89cm, arm span of ~187cm, so I’m basically between L and XL. I’ve talked with two different support guys at Evans: the first one told me to go with the L, and the other one with the XL. On this forum, I’ve seen people my size going for one or the other. So I’m really ensure about which one to take.

With the XL one, I’m afraid to gain weight and loose agility / rigidity. With the small one, I’m concerned about the lack of comfort on longer trips. Is there a noticeable difference in their behaviour? Do you know the delta in weight between the two?

Any help and feedback from Arkose riders would be greatly appreciated. And thanks for the thread, it’s awesome.

Have you got an Evans nearby? Why not just take them for a test ride and see for yourself?

Mikav – Depends on the type of riding. I ride mine on similar trails to my hardtail mountain bike  (singletrack, occasional steepish technical bits where i have to hang off the back) so If your doing the same, i’d suggest large. If its mostly road / towpath for longer distances then the XL might be more comfortable.

My Arkose is the size down from my road bike for this reason and that works well for me.

I imagine the weight difference will be almost non existent.

Andy, sorry, late reply, been away. No probs to run the Alfine/EBB version 1x geared, just buy the geared hanger for it. CGs are on the frame, only the FD is not catered for but a sideswing could be made to work.

Mikav, I’d go for the XL. But if it’s wrong Evans would swap it in 30 days and you should be able to try before you buy anyway. (Slow post sorry, just saw you’re in Switzerland, but still, ask about right bike guarantee as I’m not sure if it works overseas). You’re taller than me and I ride the L. Weight isn’t an issue, maybe 75g between sizes as off top of head estimate. Stiffness will be a fraction less but fit is way more important. Unless you’re a really strong rider wanting cx race feel I would choose on fit only. I’d ignore yhe size down thing also. And thanks, though I really don’t 🙂

Wow thanks so much Blackflag and jameso for your feedback. You guys were really helpful, and I think you convinced me to go with the XL version. I’m sure the bike is still agile in XL, and I won’t ride crazy steep and rocky trails!

Hey Ben … 42T might be a challenge for CS space. Ring will be 2-3mm off the CS. A 40T would have better clearances. It’s a 5-arm 110 on the 2015 bike, yes.

I realise the question was asked a month ago but, in case it might help others, thought it worth chipping in anyway to say I have run a 42T on my 2015 1x Arkose 2.  It did look very close to the chainstay, although so does the 38T, but it did clear.

I am 6ft2 (188CM) inside leg of 88CM, and I ride the Arkose 2 2016 frame.  XL for me is absolutely fine for road riding, gravel roads etc.  A Large would probably be too small.  I think its all about the stack measurement.

Had a few rides with 35mm tubeless G-One All Rounds on my 2015 Arkose 4.  They went up tubeless with no drama at all (25mm Tesa Tape, one wrap).

They roll great on road and grip as well as the SB8s off road (so far).

Yep, 50mm/2 inch Maxxis Re-fuse 650b on a Pinnacle Arkose 2017.

Fits no problem at all. Also have 2.0 inch Specialized Fast Trak 650b which fits easily as well. These measure to about 52mm on the outermost tread but I wouldn’t go any larger than that.

I have a set of 700c for mainly road rides with 37mm Voyager Hypers but I much prefer to head off road as much as I can. With 650b fitted it feels more nimble and no hitting the front wheel with my feet on sharp turns.

Don’t think you can really go wrong with an Arkose.

No Im thinking your have a good point with the arkose and it Will be a good bike…..but coming from mtb, riser bar and big wheels I need a little push 🙂

Have you measured the space between the tires and frame ? With the 700 wheels on…

I haven’t measured the gap but they’re designed to take 700x45c, I’m guessing with 5/6mm space either side.

I love my Pinnacle.  Mostly used as a commuter.

Mine arrived yesterday- can’t wait to get out on it later 😀

I’m torn between a single or a double chain ring version.

What are the feelings and experience of people that have gone one way or the other ?

I’m expecting my riding to be mainly leisure, maybe some bikepacking but will with some steepish off road hills.

The reason why I’m Asking is because I read somewhere that the arkose will take up to 50 mm without mudgards… I have asked Evans but they can’t confirm.  Perhaps its not important anyway because the number of tires with sizing 700x50mm is very limited….

Well first outing on my 4 didn’t go so well….

First tube pinch flatted 2 miles into ride…. second tube 0.1 mile later. Push home, convert to tubeless and much better, but only short ride as I’d run out of time.

Gear shifting not great and think I need to move saddle back  frame seems short even though at 5’9.5 a medium should be optimal.

Hoping for a better ride tomorrow!

Update: a superb morning ride on a mix of unclassified roads and bridleways and the tubeless setup worked a treat. Gears tweaked and are better and think with a couple of adjustment to bar/saddle angle it’ll be spot on.

Thinking of 45c tyres for a little more rim sympathy off-road….

The Neon disc – essentially a 2016 Arkose F+F with flat bars / flat bar geo. Fits up to 40C.

@sumsar81 Pretty sure the specs for clearance are 650b x 50mm and 700c x 45mm. I’ll get a pic when I can but I’m away from the bike for a few days at the mo.

I had a road bike and MTB before but just have the Arkose now. It does road and off-road pretty well but neither as good as separate bikes. As long as you don’t expect it to perform like a specialist bike you’re sorted I reckon. I just enjoy riding more now, more relaxed, comfortable and can do a bit of bikepacking as well.

For much better detailed info the Arkose designer @jameso is on this forum, he’s the font of all known Arkose knowlege!

I’ve had the 2018 Arkose 4 for a few months. Great bike for commuting and weekend off road rides. I’ve take it a few times on 4×4 tracks in the Cairngorms National Park, and it’s handled well.

Once thing I noticed is a clicking/popping sound coming from the rear of the bike, which has occurs since it was new but has gotten louder over time. Apparently there been issues with the freehub in previous years models, so it might be related to that. Handed it in this morning to Evans for an inspection, so will hopefully get it sorted.

That was a single batch issue on KT freehubs of an earlier design, but still with getting it checked. Most likely a bit of grease and torque needed somewhere.

Seemed to cheap to pass up, the specs on the Q&A on the site for the bike suggest the hub is 135 at the back and 100 at the front.

I believe the WTB 40c nanos are on 17mm rims by standard.

Looks like the tyres included with the wheels are 2.25 and on 19mm rims.

Plan if the tyres can’t go in, is to put my 28c tyres on the stock rims for road use/turbo training, and I’ll move the Nanos across to these new rims?

@jameso I hope you can clarify the stock situation, I see that Evans website is saying no Arkose 2 until October, is this a realistic date ?

I very much doubt it, not a 2.25. It would be a skim-fit on the current bike that has the new fork. Sorry…

I can’t sorry, better to ask via the website as the team who have stock ETAs can pick it up. 2019 model ETAs will be November or so, we don’t have really early model launches in July etc.

No worries thanks for the reply.  The existing WTB nanos can go on the new wheels, I’ll stick my slicks on the original wheels, and I’ll have a hunt for a cheap cassette and pair of brake rotors.  Hopefully don’t need anything else but it’s been a long time since I’ve assembled bike bits so off to YouTube I go.

I’ll stick the other tyres on eBay to make a few quid back.
