On One Lurcher 29er

I’ve been reading bike mags long enough to know that just because a reviewer doesn’t like a bike, it doesn’t mean I won’t too.

Looking at the One One Lurcher carbon 29er frame which is at a reduced price at the moment. Got a terrible review in this months MBR. Any owners on here who could give me their opinions? Thanks,

I don’t bother to read magazines for reviews so I can’t compare to what they’ve said.
I love mine though and I’ve come to it from a Scandal 29er, so very well thought of frame with exactly the same geometry.
The Lurcher rides so much nicer in my opinion, with no back ache at the end a ride any longer. The Scandal was too harsh for my liking.

The press fit bottom bracket would put me off. Other than that I’ve never seen a bad review against them.

I wouldn’t take an MBR review that seriously…don’t own one but they seem good and great value at the moment. Only weakness seems to be the pressfit BB though.

Aghhh £280 for a carbon frame I did not need to know that!

I’m just building one up, I’m amazed at the weight and finish of the frame for the money. Huge thread on mtbr, seem to be v popular in the US. mtbr seem to throw up some random reviews sometimes, maybe on one have dropped advertising with them or something.

It shares the geometry with the Scandal 29er, which is a great riding/handling bike.

I have Pressfit on my Giant Anthem and that’s been fine, and one on my Boardman and that’s been hammered – actually survived better than a Hope HT2 style on my 456.

What were MBR moaning about?

Its a very compliant ride, good for all day trail ridng to xc racing, the mrs has one as do several of my riding buddies, every one of them loves theirs, for £280 its a steal – you wont get a carbon frame much cheaper form the chinese!

It looks like a pot bellied pig that’s been binge eating but I’ve seen loads being raced/bivvied both geared & SS so can’t be that bad

Blimey don’t tell everyone…. i don’t want them to sell out before I get to putting one together as a gravel/winter roadie type build.

I have heard very good things re the Scandal which is why I am happy to go with the Lurcher.

Says just about everything you need to know about MBR really.

And to an extent, magazine tests in general – can often be very very much down to the individual testing the bike.

I’ve had one for a year. Much better quality and finish that ss456 I also have. Really like it for a bike, helps I’m tall possibly. I went a bit Small 19inch for 6ft 3 (very nearly) and its bang on. Ultimately it is a XC bike, you can get rough on it, but its very much getting rough on XC. Which is great, it’s what I bought it for. Its light, sturdy, dependable, and comfy.

I can see how MBR might not like it, not very enduro, from a firm with a small ad buy.

My old triple LX crank set has scored the BB shell slightly, onyl cosmetic, but newer/double cranks may/would avoid this. Not bother with BB yet.

I put off buying one for ages because of the BB and 500 miles into finally getting one it’s been fine. Fitting/removing the BB for a clean up is a doddle and with some coppaslip no creaking. Pleased that the Headset and BB have alloy inserts, you aren’t fitting straight into carbon.

I’ll concede that the top tube arching up does cut down the stand over but with 90mm stem and swoopy Salsa Bend 2 bars it’s ok reach-wise. I’ll probably swap from the salsas with their rise to some flat bars though.

I’m 5′ 11″ and ride a large Lurcher

I’m 6’2′, with relatively long legs. I usually ride a 19/20 inch or Large frame. Large Lurcher looks like it might be the right size for me?

I would say so, where abouts are you, if near the Dales your welcome to have a try on mine.

I,m 6’5″ and ride a 21″ Lurcher which fits realy well, the top tube is quite high so if you are short in the legs standover may be an issue. Other then that its a great bike, comfortable for all day xc riding and more then capable when the going gets rough. I have had no issues with the bottom bracket over 12 months of riding.

How do reviews work these days? Is it the more money you spend wining and dining the better your review? 😀

I loved my scandal and very tempted with the price of a lurcher

Im 5’9″ and love my 16″ lurcher. Should have a medium by the book really, but checking geometries the top tube length difference is tiny and main difference seems to be in seat tube length. Just means i have lots of stand-over and less material weight

Currently set up as a rigid SS with on-one’s own forks but that often switches to being a 1×10 and/or front suss depending what fiddling mood I’m in. A very versatile frame that you can chop and change to use how you like. In SS mode with Chinese carbon stem, bars and wheels its a lightweight charger.

Keep considering a spare medium 18″ frame as a n+1 spare before they sell out.

No BB problems whatsoever, there’s an uberbike BB in mine and I can just swap out the cartridge bearings when they get crunchy from the amount of wet/muddy/sandy/gritty rides this bike sucks up.

I’ve not seen the review, but no doubt the geo gets slated. Tbh unless the top tube is 4ft long and the head angle is 60deg then mbr will pretty much slam any bike.
I’m 6’2″ with a long torso and found that a 21″ suited me fine.
Best hardtail i’ve had in 20 years. I sold that and my spot to go down the single bike route with a Pyga but i have also been looking at the Lurchers at that price too.

Not defending MBR necessarily, but 4 years ago 29ers were very XC focused, then the manufacturers started tweaking geometries, IMO virtually all current 29ers are better than their 5 year old equivalents, but the Lurcher’s not changed. Things move on. I’m sure if you went back 20 years you’d find a favourable review of a bike with a 120mm stem, 560mm bars and bar ends…

Meh, I’ve got one and love it.

6′ tall and riding the 18″ frame in a 1×10 setup, marvellous.

Intreasting fact about Lurcher frame:

When my dad was aving a triple bypass last year(and mum sorta sneakily hid it from me) my mum carried the box about 2 miles to my house and said it was very light, she being a pensioner an all 🙂

This came out after my dad was a bit better.

So on a pensioner yomping test the Lurcher passed with flying colors.

I built up an On One Lurcher frame with XT kit, Reba forks and set of mavic/ hope hub wheels. Bike was excellent at xc events and just seemed to cover ground at a faster rate than the On One Whippet I had before. I’m 5 feet 7 and used s 16 inch frame. Bike met all my expectations and I’d recommend one especially at the discount price.

My Lurcher is my third 29er & is by far the best frame I’ve ever ridden.Same fantastic geometry as the Scandal with out the harshness & stiffer , better tracking.

I’ve got it set up SS , with OnOne carbon forks & slack set , bloody brilliant . Don’t let the press fit BB put you off , the Hope ‘screw together’ jobbie works well & lasts well.

If I could afford it ‘ I’d have a second Lurcher as my geared hard tail.

I really struggle to believe , at this price , how such a great frame can get anything but a good review.

I’m 6ft & the 19″ is a spot on fit.

Oh yeah , did I mention , the Lurcher is a bloody great XC / Trail frame ? 😉
