not whisky, RUM. a little education please?

rum.. something i’ve never drunk. wife bought me a bottle of Kraken spiced rum for my birthday and i liked it very much.

can anyone give me a few pointers, i have no idea how kraken is regarded or scales up in the rum world. was nice though.

whats some other similar ones to look for, are there any cheaper ones worth a sniff too (in much the same way as grants, famous grouse, bells etc are run of the mill cheaper whisky not special occasion sippers).

Some of the aldi stores still have bottles of the 15 year old dorado left. £30 a bottle and highly rated.

Not an expert in any sense. But had some of this with a nice cigar in a cigar lounge in Prague. seemed very nice to me.

The best thing is drink what you like!!
Personally I’m a big fan of Mount Gay Eclipse and Appletons VX, though the extra old is nice its more of a sipper.
Though these aren’t spiced just light golden rums. I’ve been advised on another but I can’t for the life in me remember the name of it!! its taken over in the caribbean as a favourite.
But the best advice is the first line but most decent bars in city centers carry a reasonable range these day so use it as an excuse for a night out!!

What do you think of the new stuff?

Spiced rum is adulterated rum. It makes you wonder what flaws in the spirit they are trying to cover up?

Im not a fan of the French colonial rums and prefer the darker rums from Spanish or English Speaking countries.
Angostura, El Dorado and English harbour are my favourites, I drink it neat though. No mixers or ice.

I had some lovely Plantation Rum (I think it was 5yr old) at a bar recently. I asked what I should drink it with and was told ice, and another Rum!

If you’re ever down that way, there’s a bar called St James Tavern in Brighton that has hundreds of rums, and can offer guidance.
I’m sure they gave me lots of good tasting notes, but I was trollied, so can’t remember anything I tried or learned, so can offer no useful advice.

Mount gay, Havana Especial, Appleton’s xo are all good and keenly priced.

If you’re looking at spending a bit more, Ron Zacapa 23yr is just in a different league. I’ve made a bottle last 6 months so far but at £50 a bottle, I’ll make it last a bit longer!

Mountgay and appletons here too, alhough I do like a nice dark rum too as well as the golden ones.
