So it would seem. But on another thread he’s singing the praises of Aldi waterproofs, so I suppose it balances out.

While I can see what Monkeycmonkeydo is on about, what gets me most is that fact this is all preteneding to be for the good of low income families and the community which by and large wont come all the way into town to get their bike fixed.

You’re basing this opinion on what exactly? Have you talked to any local cafe or bike shop owners about where their customers come from, and how far they travel? Rob and others are putting a lot of time and personal savings into this and you can bet they’ve done their homework. Not to mention that when they trialled the idea on Park Street they had around 100 people bring their bikes in for servicing in 6 days.

Love the way you also answer your own point about location. You’re right, I can’t imagine a cafe in St Pauls would get as much in the way of passing trade as one in the city centre.

And… can people get over the fact that the coffee is going to be decent quality stuff, from a proper machine and everything? Is this really regarded as something dangerously exotic? Maybe it’s time to bring back the coffee lounge bit of the forum.

By the way, they’re up to £3k now, with over 40 days left to go. This is clearly a doomed idea. 😉

It’s about focus, and for good or bad, the tarty coffee appears to be playing a disproportionately larger roll (see what I did there 😉 ) in the proposition than perhaps it should be. A bit more hair shirt and bit less fixie/coffee references may help with the marketing.

If you look at that BBP video, it’s the perfect example of the “hair shirt” approach. I applaud what they’re doing, massively, but I’m not falling over myself to volunteer there. Helping recovering addicts and asylum seekers build bikes takes a lot of care, understanding and patience, not my internet-stunted social skills. And it all takes place behind (very secure) closed doors. I personally prefer the idea of somewhere that’s going to be as much of a drop-in/hangout spot as it is a social enterprise.

And FFS, what’s “tarty” coffee. The rubbish instant stuff you’re probably drinking has been through a much more elaborate manufacturing process than any fresh-ground espresso or cappucino. 😉

I’m a cyclist who likes coffee and cake. But I’m struggling to see the attraction of a dedicated cycle coffeeshop, except for one that has loads of bike racks on the premises.

Wasn’t it all started by that ‘Look Mum …’ place on the telly? Makes a nice TV studio, but I’m not convinced it’s viable in little old Bristol.

We’re the eighth largest city in the UK, and we’ve got a cycling rate that’s double the national average. Oxford managed to keep a cycle co-op running for over 10 years (albeit the bricks and mortar shop came to an end in 2011). I think Bristol needs this more than it needs another delicatessen or a student nightclub.
