And, overnight, every other ship became obselete. Including the rest of the Royal Navy unfortunately.

But seriously? You’ll have a great life. I spent the best years of my life crewing the Robert Eaves. Had some close shaves in there too. Be ready for anything

My Uncle Peter was on the Bulwark, I’m dead proud of him & I’m 54! He joined up at 17 as a 3rd class stoker & retired as a Fleet Chief Petty Officer 32 years later, one of the 1st to be promoted to that rank.

HMS Coventry, 25 May 1982. My brother was on board at that moment, two decks down. Took him twenty minutes to get overboard.

There will be alot of cleaning and painting involved as a seaman specialist, how do you think the ship stays clean and maintained? But there is also alot of other stuff, seamanship, firefighting, damage control, boat cox’n, weapons, etc etc. Basic training is full of BS to get you knocked into shape and conditioned to life onboard, however nothing can prepare you for your first draft. And expect to get the mickey taken out of you when you join your first ship, I dont think you can really know what to expect life is like onboard until you get your first draft, it’ll be hard the first few months until you settle in.

I was on big ships (Invincible) and small ships (Patrol Boat) and there is a vast difference between the culture onboard each. However, I managed to get out of the seaman branch, so I had some more interesting experiences than most.

I had some epic times and went to some epic places, (been to both artic circle and Antartica, not many people can say that), crossed the equater, chased drug and gun runners (even caught a couple) and drunk far, far more than I ever should have.

You’ll have some great times and mates.

Most important thing though, a sense of humour, because beleive me, your going to need it.

    And learn to play uckers!

Just a shame joannas isn’t there for you when you get to Pompey, the most legendary nightclub ever, can’t believe that place shut down, don’t know how the matelots get on down there now!

Whaaaat? They’ve shut down the Royal Navy school of dancing! Must be the cutbacks. Where will impressionable young matelots go to have sexual relations with older embittered (but most importantly at sea) matelots wifes?

Oh and AEM (AE) by the way. Navy by choice Fleet Air Arm by the grace of god… so on and so forth.

Hope everything goes alright for you with regards to joining up mate.

Just listen to the other guys once you get your first sea draft. Don’t gob off too much and don’t piss off the killick of the mess. Do those things and you shouldn’t have to buy too many crates.#

And don’t forget to pay your bunk light bill 😉

Hope to see you in the Fleet. However, and not meaning to be a killjoy, but if weapon training is your main focus you’d be better off becoming a Warfare Specialist and then specialising AWW. With the new BCC firing qualifications coming in you’re not likely to touch a gun that often after basic training in the Seaman Specialist Branch. Spec is a varied and interesting job though with a better than average chance of promotion, so go for it and enjoy yourself.

Joanna’s shut!!!next you’ll be telling me that diamond Lil’s is shut. Where do the young matelots go for their education now??

At least Charlies bar is still in Gib, however, thats not as special as it was, now the Navy moved out of Gib.

Let’s be honest, Jo’s isn’t a great loss. AFAIK Emma’s in Gosport, Jester’s in Guz & Harbour Lights are all still going though.
