[Closed] Nantwich or thereabouts? Any "local" knowledge?

Eyeing up a job in Nantwich*, anyone live near there? What riding is there to be had locally? Presume Llandegla is near-ish, Wales is on the doorstep but is there anything good that's very near?

Any suggestions for where's good to live within commuting distance of Nantwich given the need for two-wheel action?

Thanks in advance for any intel.

*OK it's not the Peak, my first choice, however looking to relocate from London so can't be too choosy, depends where the jobs come up really...

You're right - you are very close to Llandegla there, but Crewe's downfall is its flatness. I did see a stonking looking BMX track the other day (on the Nantwich side of Crewe nonetheless) but I suspect that'll be down to it being Shanaze Reade's manor.

You're only 45 minutes from Macclesfield Forest, and not too far down the M6 to Cannock. Lee Quarry's not too far of a weekend either.

I do think 'from the door excitement' may be a bit limited but Nantwich is very nice though - considered proper posh (compared to Crewe..!)

necaste under lyme, approx 30 miutes commute away form nantwich - Hanchurch woods good local XC, weekly group rides with the chaps from goldtech and swinnertons, cannock chase 35 minutes drive, llandangly trail centre and clwyds about and hour and a lot bloody cheaper for rent and housing than cheshire!

How far / for how long would you be prepared to commute? Is N Wales / E Cheshire an option? It would open up more riding possibilities, but, as tazzymtb says, you'll be looking at wildly different house prices.

North wales, wrexham and surrounding areas aren't too bad cost wise and at least you'll be close to some good riding.

Dunno really, and these are just initial thoughts at the moment - I currently drive 25-30 mins (7 miles) into work in SE London which doesn't seem like anything really. Methinks I could cover a bit further around that area in 25-30 mins!!

intersted too. Work in Knutsford but drive from Halifax and its a mare - took me 2 hours tonight...

Where else in this part of the world (west from Knutsford) is nice?

Getting through Crewe from the east is a pig in the morning, so 25/30 mins won't get you very much - it's a good hour from Macclesfield way on the commute. I don't know enough about it, but I bet half an hour north west of Nantwich - into the borders - would be pretty cool. There's more riding round those parts than just Llandegla too!

DaveyBoyWonder - does it have to be to the west? If you go east, you're not stuck only to Alderley Edge - there's the more sensible likes of New Mills and so on that would chop your commute to a third, I'd have thought?

West of Nantwich is a lovely part of Cheshire especially round the Peckforton Hills but its an MTB desert (like most of Cheshire) however it is within easy reach of NE Wales where all the best local MTB options are such as The Berwyn Hills, Clywidian Hills, Llangollen, Llandegla etc. Also a blast down the A5 gets you to Penmachno and Betws-y-Coed. Go East and the Peak District isn't too far either.

I'd also suggest N Shropshire round Ellesmere as property is cheaper than Cheshire- its where we have long term plans to relocate.

I would definately want riding on the doorstep - been half looking to see if theres anywhere within riding distance of Delamere etc.

Will keep on looking... a nice little village with a pub and a garage to store my MX5 in might make up for not having much off-road riding on the doorstep!

blimey - clean forgot about Delamere - really sorry about that. That's not too far at all from Nantwich, but not really 'on your doorstep'. Cheshire's great, but the proper hills are almost at the edges of it.

Ride round Shrewsbury every Wednesday night - great bunch of people

Great riding in Clwydians, Llandegla, Llangollen, Bala, Nescliffe, and west of Oswestry/Berwyns etc

I go for days in Coed Y Brenin from Alsager. Like people say, plenty of riding within a cars journey, but not much on the doorstep.

Delamere's another place that's ok if you've got no other choice, but not really a destination in it's own right IMO, bit like Cannock.

We've just moved to Northwich, about 7 miles from Delamere, its not bad, but I'm glad we haven't bought it..

Davenham/ Hartford/ Moulton/ Sandyway are very nice looking places... still only 15mins from the M6..

Hmm, thanks all. Maybe I need to hold out for something more Peak-friendly... Will bear all this in mind, cheers!
