Have a big trip coming up. I’ve got a few chat style podcasts ready but it’s quite nice to have something a bit meatier as well. Have enjoyed West Cork Murders, Missing Crypto Queen, How To Burn a Million Quid, Paradise, Fake Heiress, Fake Psychic. Bit of a true crime leaning there, but I’d recommend all of them. What else is out there and worth a listen?

It’s not true crime, although there is a weird blend of truth and fiction, but I absolutely loved that. I’ve even listened to it twice, which is something I never, ever do.

You’ll probably need a basic understanding of the occult or a few legends to get the most out of it, or to at least recognise which bits are ‘true’ (Comte St Germain, Rowanoak colony, that sort of thing)

Dan Carlin does some epic podcasts.

His podcast “Blueprint for Armageddon”, on the First World War, has 5 episodes and over 20+ hours. It’s excellent.

Forbidden Diary – A true WW2 prison survival story – Slightly melodramatic at times, but a great listen

S-Town; Weird, but fascinating – A bit sweary at times so headphones required.

Girlfiends; Doctor. Pilot. Murderer? – Based on actual recordings of the main characters involved. Hooked me quickly despite the intrusive Ads (you can fast forward if you are not driving) and ‘recaps’

A recent book of the week on R4, The Siege by Ben MacIntyre. About the SAS storming the Iranian embassy was good. Also on R4, The Lowball Tapes, all about the 2008 banking crash, featuring recordings of bankers talking to one another about it all. Also a bit sweary as you might imagine.

Just onto the last episode of hoaxed on BBC sounds about the Hampstead heath conspiracy.

    Quite gripping.

A bit different but Jon Ronson has done a great series called ‘The Last Days Of August’ about the suicide of August Aimes and what drove her to it. He also did a series called ‘The Butterfly Effect which is really good too.

The Lovecraft Investigations on BBC are pretty good if you like a bit of fantasy/occult Dan Brown type stuff.

Jon Ronson has a few good series.

I get most of my podcasts via BBC Sounds, The Coming Storm about Qanon and MAGA is good, Bad People for a true crime theme

Real Survival Stories on Sounds is good, although the narration can be a little overly embellished for my liking.

Some great stories about people nearly carking it though but surviving against the odds.

I’ll second bad people. I thought id miss the departure of Sophie but I feel it’s grown and evolved nicely

I don’t like the new lady. Sophie was funny.

Another recommendation for Dan Carlin’s series. Some of the blueprint stuff is incredibly moving. He’s got an ability to bring abstract events such as the Siege of Sparta to life in great detail.

I was forcibly subjected to Thucydides’ History of the Peloponnesian War at school. Mr Clarke completely failed to spark any enthusiasm in me for it. Whereas I could listen to King of Kings on repeat and not get bored.

Supernova in the East and Destroyer of Worlds are great follow ups to Blueprint.

squirrelking’s recommedation of My Dad Wrote a Porno is quite an amusing podcast.

The Banksy Story from BBC is really good.

And another shout for Jon Ronson’s work – just finished the second series of Things Fall Apart (BBC), he really gets into the nuances of his material. It’s kind of the story of the “culture wars” became such a big thing.

If you like true crime – “Someone Knows Something” by CBC / David Ridgen.  I listened via Spotify.  Similar vein to those you listed.  Would also recommend S-Town as mentioned above and Serial Series 1 if you’ve never listened to that.

Tim Harford, from BBC’s More or Less, does the excellent Cautionary Tales podcast.

The Lovecraft Investigations on the BBC has already been mentioned, but it really is excellent, and in no way a straight retelling of any of the HPL stories they are inspired by.
I also enjoyed The White vault series. Spooky again and very much a feel of old-fashioned radio drama.

I can’t believe nobody has suggested The Teacher’s Pet yet, it is absolutely fascinating listening. I can’t recommend this enough based on your original list.

    https://open.spotify.com/show/19LCrHZaUuWvizzJRZi8YN

I will also second some of the other suggestions above such as S-Town and series 1 from Serial (same guys that made S-Town). Those are really interesting to listen to!

    https://open.spotify.com/show/5wMPFS9B5V7gg6hZ3UZ7hf

Some of the BBC ones mentioned such as A Very British Cult, To Catch a Scorpion, Worse Than Murder, Lazarus Heist (very good!) are definitely worth a listen.

But seriously, Teacher’s Pet, best one out there. You’ll be practicing saying ”The DPP” in your best aussie accent in no time.

Big fan of Anita Anand and William Dalrymple on the Empire pod, too – not just a great history pod, but they’re so clearly having a great time making them, I find them way easier to listen to than Dan Carlin. 🙂
