Hydraulic brakes help needed in sunny coventry

Hi, I have bought a £500 bike 1 year ago from my local shop i ride 125 miles a week to work. 3 months ago the brakes where not good, i am not technical so back it went. £50 later i was told new pads where fitted. To my surprise the brakes werent much better, now they are usless. Back to the shop, i have been quoted £250 for a service and new brakes, is it me or are they having a laugh? I would really appreciate if anyone in the coventry warcs area can help, i have no technical ability but i can brin the bike wherever needed.

I’m in Coventry. Name and shame bike shop, as I’ll bet I know which one quoted you that
Are the brakes hydraulic or cable. Disc or V?
I would say that they need bleeding and would be happy to do it for you, but will be away until the end of the month
If they are hydraulic then try holding the brakes on and taping/cable tying the levers to the bars
Leave overnight or for 24hrs. This burps any air bubbles into the lever reservoir
It’s only a temporary fix but it works until you can get to bleed them properly

Thats perfect thanks i will try tonight, i live in tile hill when your back i would be v grateful of your help. The brakes are disk brakes. Tbh i have always thought there a bit rubbish, i thought disks where the ds bs maybe not
