My understanding is there like a 50/50
Bike so half road half mtb. Look quite good like.

I've had a couple and I really like them as just 'bikes' - going to work, running errands etc. But I wouldn't want to have taken either of them on anything but canal path style bridleways. But they range from basically flat bar road bikes to basically flat bar gravel bikes. Check the tyre clearance if you expect to be doing a lot of bridleways!

They're fine on the road, just as long as speed isn't a priority, the upright position along with extra weight isn't going to set the world on fire. Some frames have masses of clearance these days for up to ~2.3" tyres, but some like my Marasa have chunky rearward triple front mechs that sit behind the seat tube, limiting the rear to ~45mm max without a mudguard.

You can always stretch out and narow the bars a bit to get a bit more aero on the road, along with not using a super wide front tyre.

I guess speed wise they be like similar
To a mtb on the road ? I’m kinda wanting the upright position as I have a terrible bad back so should help abit.

Mrs_oab has a flat bar bike - built from a Giant Gravel/CX bike. It's running 700c x 38mm Continental Speed tyres, full mudguards, comfy saddle etc. It's much, much nippier on road than her mountain bike running 27.5 x 2.3 Hans Dampf and Nobby Nic. It's also happy rattling around forest tracks, loose and bumpy rural roads.

I've an 'on point' "gravel" bike that's over geared, not wide enough tyres, traditional drop bars etc. It's just not as good for what we use it for - lots on road with light off road. The 36mm tyres struggle off road on bumps.

IMO, I would buy a Hybrid/Touring bike in future. 700c x 40mm tyres. Flat bar or alt bar and bar ends. Lower gearing.

I have a Raleigh Cadent, it's horrific.... the ride, handling, turning is just not very nice, too low a front end etc... But, it's functional, it pedals, rolls and is reasonably comfortable.

I would never choose to ride it over a MTB unless really needing dedicated speed increase.

Big fan of a hybrid - if I have to go a long way, the racer is quicker, but my ten year old Kona Dew City gets the nod for anything where we have to take kit, or where the surface is broken. It's done 60 mile sportives, 20 mile each way commutes, muddy tow paths and the occasional trail centre blue route - it's not an MTB so I don't thrash it like one, but for comfort and utility, it's hard to beat. With the stem dropped and 80psi 28mm Gatorskins, I reckoned it was about 2 mph slower than my racer (middle-aged and overweight, for full disclosure 🙂 ). It's also more fun to descend on than the racer, for me - flat bars just feel safer to me! 🙂

I think I prefer hybrids to drop bar road bikes.
I’d quite like one of these!

I had one when I was commuting a lot in fairly heavy traffic. Preferred it to a roadbike in terms of braking/general controls and quicker than my mountain bikes (plus avoids wearing down the tyres on them).
Definitely worth trying them out although depending how much bridleways you are doing looking at a flat barred gravel bike might make more sense.

I’m gonna try one. I like doing road and down some little bridal ways near me so seems the sensible thing todo. I find the mtb a pita on road even with skinnier tyres on so time for a change plus it’s my 30th soon so I’ve told the mrs I’m treating my self 😂

I'll second the Kona Dew, mine came with the standard 32mm City Rides which were absolutely fine for commuting. Then the roads got rougher and I switched them for 40mm Nanos (albeit with no mudguard clearance). Fast forward and now I need bigger tyres because the roads are a joke and I just can't be bothered with the pounding, fitted 26x2.3 Booze Lights which were brilliant but had Rizla level clearance. So I've now got a new bike.

FWIW that Dew has handled barely bedded in gravel tracks, 60 mile rides and a good few years of commuting with barely a whimper, it's a fantastic bike and I'd be keeping it if it wasn't for the fact the roads are such a disgrace. If you want something to dip your toes gimme a shout otherwise if you want to go new I wouldn't hesitate to recommend one.

Brilliant things for the right purpose.

If you want a gentle going places bike that has an ok turn of speed on the road and can cope with some forest tracks, short sections of what cycle tourists would call "rough stuff" etc.

If you want options for mudguards and a rack, a comfy upright position then a hybrid with 700*40 ish touring tyres may be for you. 🙂

If you want to razz along the tarmac or hack your way down technical off road trails then it'll be shocking.
