100mm xc hardtail - what would you expect it to weigh (ish)
Nothing fancy, alu frame.
Frame only I'm assuming (cos otherwise there's Sooooooooo many variables!)
Sub 3lb for a ridiculously light XC race frame, up to over 4lb for something more budget or stronger. About 3.5lb for something mid way like an On One Scandal etc.
no - mid range complete weight. Just built one up and wondering what to expect before i weight it 🙂
Mid-weight, mid- range.......28lbs?
Tell you what, you tell me how long my piece of string is and I'll have a go.
sub 20lb nice but something will break before the end of the season
21 - 23lb race weight
24 - 26 solid all round use, so my guess would be around here somewhere
27 lb + could do with a diet once you work out your riding priorities
Tell you what, you tell me how long my piece of string is and I'll have a go.
LOL
Was similar to what I was gonna post first time round, but thought I'd refrain...
Anyway, 712.5mm, am I close? 😉
unless you've got an eye on light then you might be in for a shock,
my giant xtc with r7 platinums and v.light finishing kit, reasonable wheels comes out about 27lbs maybe a bit less, being realistic with pedals on etc 😀
i think sub 30lbs is reasonable. just depends what you have,
and what you think reasonable is,
http://www.light-bikes.com/BikeGallery/
proper light bikes!
mid weight I'd say 25lb
light I'd day 22lb
very light/race weight sub 20lb
teutonic weight weenie sub 15lb
was just thinking about published weights in mags and how far out they are thats all
I'm often at a loss of where the manufactures/magazines get their weights from (note: Honda use to weigh their motorcycles in a vacuum with no liquids in them whatsover...), especially when compared to my own experiences of weighing my bikes.
A riding buddy has an old alloy framed v-brake Schwinn, decent spec - it weighs over 32 lbs. My XTC C1 (carbon) started life at 27 lbs, and finished at 23.5 lbs.
On-One Inbred (Mavic 317s/Reba Dual Airs/XT drivetrain) 30lbs. Had the bits of this frame on an Alu frame with carbon bars/stem/seatpost was 27lbs quite shocked but have now got over the weighing thing!
(Mr MC posting)
MC's small Cube womens specific hardtail now weighs the manufacturers claimed weight, after it dropped nearly 2lbs with the addition of lighter wheels...
I think swedish chef is being optimistic, if a 15" ally hardtail with flat bars and light wheels and tyres (it came with racing ralphs) weighs 27lbs
http://www.singletrackworld.com/forum/topic/bike-weights-1
My handjob is 26lbs with Reba Races, RaceFace Evolove XC/LX drive train, RaceFace Deus finishing kit and Crossrides
My Ti Inbred is approx 26lbs and thats with decent but not superlight kit...
http://www.flickr.com/photos/9783730@N06/775820574/in/set-72157600759566149/
my merida comes in at 31lbs, with new saddle and grips, but i dont have the money to upgrade anything and i wouldnt know what to upgrade first.
28 lbs
I think swedish chef is being optimistic
possibly, however steve_b77 has provided a solid build at 26lbs
My handjob is 26lbs with Reba Races, RaceFace Evolove XC/LX drive train, RaceFace Deus finishing kit and Crossrides is based on opinion
and njee20 provided a realistic weight weenie one.
Now my solid build might be different to others, but LX, Reba's, and Mavic's is a perfect example of putting together a XC bike for racing/all day riding that's gonna last. For me 26lb is a boundary between getting heavy and going light. For others it might be 28, and others 24. Horses for courses.
26 - 27 lbs should give you a strong XC bike anything more is too heavy and under 25 lbs is better.
njee20- nice string and glue bike, i like it 🙂
I take it it's one of the carbon fibre straight from taiwan jobos via ebay? I keep looking at them and getting tempted
When I started riding MTBs about 16 years ago, most rigid steel hardtails weighed about 27-28lbs (quoted).
Obviously in the intervening time we've added sus forks and hydraulic disks, so slightly heavier builds, but over those years almost all of the manufacturers have boasted about weight loss every year, to the extent that my bike now should weigh absolutely nothing.
I bought a steel hardtail last year - it weighs a pound more than my first steel hardtail.
I get the sneaking feeling that manufacturers tell lots of porkies.......
I take it it's one of the carbon fibre straight from taiwan jobos via ebay?
Yep! I'm really impressed! It's finished better than I'd expected, it's lighter than claimed, it rides really nicely, and it was cheaper than a ScandAl!
Original question though was whats a typical weight for a reasonable build. Steve_b77 handjob has some nice kit in the Reba Race's and Deus finishing kit - The Deus is certainly a level above 'reasonable' build components.
Just weighed mine (not hugely accurately)Its a bit of a bastard mix but that suits me 🙂 26 lbs ish
Raleigh titanium frame
Hope hoops with 5.1s
conti mountain kings
Coil pikes
No CF anywhere
Full mudguards
Bottle cage pump and clip
Thomson seatpost and SBG seat
No name bars rubber grips
Hope mono minis 180 / 160
It could easily loose a few lbs off that
scandAL's are nice though, there's just no scandium in them! so on-one just sell aluminium.
Having said that my ebay special £100.00 [s]scandal[/s]aluminiumAL 29er frame is very nice and built into a 29er ss with boingy forks at just under 22lbs so not bad for a nichewhore hack bike 😀
I bought a trek 8000 hardtail for xc event duties recently. wish I could have afforded carbon or even top fuel fs race bike, but I had otehr commitments. Swapped out some of the really hefty bits,(tyres, seatpost, saddle, bars and pedals) with some creative, swapping, Ebaying and STW clasified work, so have probably only spent another £180 ish on it, and it comes in just a shade over 24 lbs (not theoretical, properly weighed)
So I am happy enough with that. Wish I had the money to upgrade the wheels to something lighter and I would have really improved the bike that way, but you can only afford what you can afford !
wish I could have afforded carbon or even top fuel fs race bike
What... like my other MTB?

Sorry, I'll put my cock away now 😀
njee that HT frame of yours looks very like a giant 2008 carbon xtc job. I
Git 😉
kidding aside it is a beaut by the way, mind you, I'd love to pick some fault with it, but frankly I cant ! 😆 your lawns in need of some TLC though, sort that out !
OP - how much have you spent on it? I'd say 30lb would be fine. More importantly, how much do you weigh/how much kit do you carry on you when you go out riding?
tazzymtb - MemberscandAL's are nice though, there's just no scandium in them! so on-one just sell aluminium.
depends what year your scandal is 😉
mines one of the last 26" vertical drop out ones and it's 23lb on the nose.
that's with pedals, bottle cages etc etc no cheating and verified on at least 3 sets of calibrated scales
njee that HT frame of yours looks very like a giant 2008 carbon xtc job
Hmmm... it's not impossible, I'd be surprised though, as Giant tend to do their own frames. I believe this comes from a company called Hasa.
This is one with some stickers and some tiny differences: [img]

"scandAL's are nice though, there's just no scandium in them! so on-one just sell aluminium. "
Not that it seemed to make the slightest bit of difference when they stopped with the scandium.
'bout 13Lbs http://weightweenies.starbike.com/articles.php?ID=94
Although that is carbon and slightly shorter travel.
FWIW I aiming for sub-16Lbs Saracen HT for SSEC. Magnesium frame, 100mm forks but only one gear (obviously). Not sure how well my current (13 year old steel Claude Butler) SS hack bike would stand up to it...

Has a friend filled it with sand?
My Handjob is 25lbs with middling kit.

Mines a similar build.
My Soul weighs ~28lbs with Talas, M4's and 321's/2.25 tyres! Okay its decent kit but its on the lardy side. Could lose a couple of pounds alone by swapping to my tubeless hope hoops.
I'd say 25-26lbs is the a answer to the OP
Just weighed mine using the tried and tested bathroom scales (me on and then me plus bike) and it comes out at a lardy 29lb 🙁
Hey ho will have to ride faster/further/more often!
Large GT avalanche frame
Truvativ Stylo cranks/gxp bb
Syncros bulk bars
Truvativ XR stem
Raceface ride seat post
FSA xc200 wheels + 2.1 folding conti speed kings
Tektro aurigo comp brakes
xt front and rear mechs deore shifters
sram 970 cassette
ritchey foam grips
Charge knife saddle
In bold are the heavy bits that could be changed relatively cheaply but in all honesty they would make what 2-300g difference but at what cost!!
EDIT - the cassette can be changed for the spare XT one i have in the shed and save 120g 🙂
Candys to swap for the acids tomorrow and a further 100+g
Just under 1/2 a pound saved 🙂
Depends on the frame size as I weighed a Zaskar at 3.6lbs or 1.65kg and it was a 19.5".
Some bike reviews put the frame size on too.
Persoanlly I wouldn't worry unless you race then 24lbs or under at least.
I made my bike uber light 21 lbs on bike shop scale and carbon parts but then it rode light and crap.
Now it's 23lbs and burly built-rides a lot better for fun trails.
Weight aside, that Orange is lovely.
thank you 😀 I like it and don't really find it heavy as my big susser weighs in at 39lb and gets used on below 15 mile rides so after that the Orange feels very light. + I weigh 15st so hardly light myself.

it's a real rough estimate using fishing scales but its near there, I think
only miffed when other people quote weights,
its a giant xtc frame small,
r7 platinums,
xt/717 wheels/fire xc pro folding tyres,
xt crank, 950cassette chain?
xt/deore mechs/lx shifters
hayes el camino brakes
ricthey 4axis stem / fsa xc190 bar / charge sponge grips
spoon saddle / ea50 post
m520 pedals
oh and a lot of sand 😀
maybe i should get it weighed properly and find out once and for all,
not real desire to change anything on it pretty much got it as i like it,
dont think i can lighten greatly it much without splashing lots of cash on it now.
Genesis Altitude 19" - 29 lbs with not particularily trying. Setup currently for lakes type winter riding with
Revs, coil U-turn 85-130mm(pushed)
SLX twin and bash
Xm719s running 2.3 Swampthings (tubeless)
Oro K18 brakes
SLX running gear
Mixture of thompson and easton finishing kit
Would be easy (but not cheap!) to shed several lbs by swapping the wheel/tyre combo and forks, fit a ligher bash setup. Say 26lb with some black stuff added in.
Maxlight sml 23.9lbs using luggage scales
Fox 80RL, crossmax sl/captain 2bliss, XT c/s, X9 shifters/der, hope mini mono
