I’ve got a Garmin Edge 1000 with full os mapping and want to download gps routes to it. Only thing is I only use an iPad, my laptop hasn’t been used for five years and is about knackered. Any easy way, if any, of doing it chaps?
Via Strava routes?
Will have a look at that.
There’s a ConnectIQ app called RouteCourse which will allow you to get routes on there wirelessly.
Bez, I’ve got that working ok but is there somewhere on Strava that I can find routes to download?
The route builder in Connect is pretty good. Maybe that could assist?
Thanks guys, going to give route builder a go. Just need to practice a wee bit I reckon!
I do it via iPhone a fair bit with the garmin connect app. Download the route from the site/app - sometimes I just email it to myself. Then select open in and choose garmin connect. Should open up in there (I've found it helps if the app is already open prior) You should then be able to add it to your 'courses'. When saved, open the course in the connect app, tap the top right 'more' dots and send to device.
As above if you save the route to your phone or iCloud Drive then you can open it with the Garmin connect app, and then rename and save then send to your edge as normal
I've heard about people doing this on iOS before but it never works for me. Garmin Connect never shows up in the list of apps I can send a file to, whether it's a .fit, .tcx or .gpx. Apps like Komoot and Easyroute appear, but never Connect. I've just tried opening up Connect and then immediately returning to Safari and downloading a route, but still no joy.
What's the trick?
Strava Routes, Trailforks and Kommoot all have Garmin Connect IQ apps that you can load onto the Edge 1000. From these apps you can select the course and they will hand it on to the Garmin navigation engine for routing.
Will this a try as well fellas
Just tried the above and im the same as Bez, can't find connect anywhere for it to send it to. Bugger, must be doing something wrong, but it just dosent give me the option to open it in connect.
I doesn’t show the Garmin connect icon straight it is on the same line as the list of options (message, add to notes, add to health etc.).
I can even do it when they are sent through as email attachments. I click on the attachment and then it opens as a text file, then I click on the box with an up arrow in it ( top right hand corner) then scroll through the app options until I get to copy to connect with the Garmin logo and click on that
Nope, none of that here. Garmin Connect never shows up in any sharing options anywhere, for any of the above file formats.
There’s also an IOS version of Basecamp.
No there isn't 🙂

Sorry, I'm not up with Apple stuff; OS 10.13 is just for Macs then?
you can send routes directly to a Garmin device from the Garmin Connect website
Easier to use the app, then you don't have to plug anything in or rely on having your own PC available. Not sure if it works on Macs anyway, haven't tried.
But that's only any use for routes you've planned on Garmin Connect. And when I go to plan a route on there it tells me it'll be visible to anyone on the Connect site, so there's no way I'm going to use it. (And I suspect their tooling isn't anywhere near as good as RWGPS anyway.)
Not sure why some iPhone users seem to be able to send files to the Garmin Connect app and some can't.

MacOS aka OSX is for Macs, iOS is for iPhones and iPads 🙂

I was under the impression that some folk couldn't get the App to work properly so looking at this as a workaround; presumably you could access the Connect website on the IPhone's browser.
I'm not sure about the visibility of courses created on the website but I thought that you could set whatever visibility you wanted using Google Maps or HERE Maps; if you select Open Street Map then the following message pops up - Courses created with OpenStreetMap are public, available for the entire Garmin Connect community to view and use.
But that’s only any use for routes you’ve planned on Garmin Connect.
You can import .gpx & .tcx into the Connect website (and transfer directly to the Garmin unit if you want); presumably once the routes are uploaded to Connect via the website they'll sync. with the App on the IPhone.

Nope, the site won't work on an iPhone. Aside from the site not coping with small screen sizes, if you try to sign in you can't enter your password. Hmph.
Uploading to Connect via the web would let me sync wirelessly to the phone, but involves downloading and uploading via a computer, which is a faff and requires a computer. I'm looking for a workflow which will allow me to download a route from the web on my phone and send it wirelessly to the Edge (which essentially means being able to share the file to the Connect iOS app).
RouteCourse will let me sync pinned routes from RWGPS, which covers me for most of what I need to do, but if I could have a generic download-and-transfer process then that lets me do the same and more.
FWIW I've just tried using the Google Maps option and yes, it'll let you create a private route (I've no idea why they don't let you do that with OSM, it's ridiculous) but I don't find Garmin's route planner as good as RWGPS. It's slow and buggy and doesn't have a lot of the features that I use in RWGPS. And it doesn't even have OpenCycleMap…
Before you go trying to figure out a work around, what iPad do you have? Will it still be supported by the new iOs which is due in September along with their new iPhone release because NEWSFLASH!!!!! the new iOs will allow external storage devices to be used! (Don't even get me started on the new other updates that iOs13 brings (yes I'm an apple nerd).) So in theory you'll able to plug in your garmin unit and it will mount as a drive.

gpx needs to be on device or Dropbox (or similar).
In files app (or dropbox or similar) use the export function
Then you should get the iOS sharing menu pop up - this should have a "Copy to Connect" link which will open the Connect App and import the GPX.
However, it will often crap out and fail...
Which bit of the steps above are you missing?
I'm on version 4.19.1 of the app, iOS 12.3.1
OK, so I downloaded some route files to the Files app, then tried to share those. Same result as sharing directly from downloading it in Safari: I get options to copy to Komoot or EasyRoute, but not Connect. Seems to me that the problem is that Connect isn't responding to say it can open gpx/tcx/fit files. App 14.9.1.1, iOS 12.0.1, FWIW.
AHA WAIT A MINUTE
Thanks for explicitly using the phrase "copy to Connect" 🙂
That allowed me to find this page, which—although some of the things it talks about have changed since it was written—is really helpful:
https://medium.com/@jonhume/uploading-gpx-routes-onto-the-garmin-820-using-an-iphone-d8fb95c65101
In particular: "We can’t use TCX or other options because the Garmin Connect app only registers itself on the phone as being able to handle GPX files."
I figured I'd read the whole thing before taking its advice to go and install a separate browser, and when I saw that I thought why not try the .gpx file one more time. Hey presto, I get the Connect option! No idea why it didn't appear before; either it wasn't responding for some reason or I'd tapped the wrong download link by mistake, I guess.
So it looks like it might be sorted. I'll have a play around with it over the weekend and see how I get on.
Thanks 🙂
Winner 🙂
I 'share to device' directly from the Connect App to my Edge or Instinct.
If I've planned a route on Viewranger on my phone, or BikeHike on my Mac (then bluetooth to phone) I then open the routes in my download folder on my phone, Connect comes up as an option. This is on an android device, but it's super-easy.
Success! Thanks guys, followed the instructions on the link that Bez put on and I’m up and running! Downloaded some routes from mbr to my phone, copied to connect then sent to Edge.
Beers all round then

This is very helpful. Download_file_then_open_in_Connect worked on Android with gpx but not fit files when I tried just now.
Ahem, I used the phrase ‘copy to connect’ about five hours ago.... 😉
Glad it’s working now though 🙂
It was the quote marks that made me realise that was the exact phrase that would be mentioned by any detailed how-to that might be out there 😉
You still get a beer though
