Not sure if it’s worth replacing this freehub:

It was already showing some wear last year when I took the old cassette off but has got a lot worse since running the current Sunrace MS-8 11-46 (11-speed) cassette.  The cassette itself is still fine but was getting very rattly which is why I checked.

Looking at the wear pattern on the hub, it’s as if the splines are a bit short even though it’s a normal HG hub – would I be better off with the slightly longer HG 11 road-style cassette?
Perhaps the sunrace cassettes need that.

I’ve got two compatible options as far as I can tell for the hub which is a Chosen one as per the two available on Merlin:

That or a whole new hub which I expect means a new wheel for me as no wheel-building experience.

I wouldn’t bother, The number of chosen hubs that have failed on the Orbea Rise is almost all between 100-300 miles. The replacement freehub is probably as expensive as the whole hub.

that’s in good nick compared to some of mine!

As long as the bearings are ok and it’s picking up OK I’d just put it back together and do the lock nut up tight TIGHT. They have a 40Nm ish spec which is pretty tight.

    Thanks for the input.

I’ll have to put it back together in the short term anyway or the wednesday night pub ride’s going to be interesting on the road bike instead!

The sprockets are all steel so getting a bit tighter shouldn’t do any harm. + the bearings/pickup are still ok, though I was wondering if the shifting was starting to get erratic.  Certainly having to do a few double-shifts / one-back to get where I wanted sometimes.

    Long-term though – yep doesn’t seem worth replacing as-is.

Halo use the same freehub. They call it Supadrive.

Halo supply a steel version of the freehub but it costs many pounds! They also sell the springs and pawls separately. All the sealed bearings in both the freehub and axel can be replaced.

The worst thing about these freehubs is the not very effective flappy seal (in your photo). Which once damaged lets water in like a sieve (the retention ring rusts and pawls stick down) and cannot be bought from any of the suppliers!

I’ve a hope Pro2 hub with worse denting than that. I’d file down the bits that are proud just to make life easier getting the cassette on + off next time.

I do have bad experience of the pawl spring on those types of freehubs though – that single pisssy thin wire loop spring to actuate all 3 pawls – so when (when, not If) it breaks you end up with no drive – a freehub that rotates freely both directions. Bad news indeed on the top of a Moor or hours or days from civilisation!
(I try to avoid hubs with them and get ones with a seperate spring per pawl like on Hope etc.)
