And it got me thinking about all the hip-hop I was listening to in the late 90s early noughties (before I got old and boring) Mo Wax, DJ Shadow, Beastie Boys and so forth. Must be a ton of BBoy Headz on here, so what are your recommendations to be added to a middle aged Spotify play list?

To be honest now my favourite hip hop to listen to now is mixes from or in the style of DJ Yoda. Brings in some classic hip hop mashed with some pop cheese but done so well.

Fully agree with this. There is so much amazing ukhh right now and has been for a very long time now. Obvs HF put amazing music out on a regular basis like recently we had new Pitch, Ed Scissor, Dat Kid, and TrueMendous’s Misdiagnosis Of Chyvonne Johnson is legit one of the albums of the year.

Main Source – Breaking Atoms. Possibly the best 80’s hip hop album. It has the same dry humour as De La Soul TFHaR but with much much darker lyrics and beats.

Dr Octagon, Dan the Automator, Slick Rick, Tone Loc, The Young MC all get solid look-ins from me too.

As above, Czarface’s album ‘Every Hero Needs a Villian’ is absolutely excellent. Kendrick Lamar’s ‘Good Kid M.A.D City’ and ‘To Pimp a Butterfly’ are seminal listening too.

I’d also highlight a group called ‘clipping.’ who are a bit more industrial but super interesting. Their last two albums (There Existed an Addition to Blood and Visions of Bodies Being Burned) have been in my top 5 for the last two years.

I think this is a good place to ask.

I quite enjoy the sound of people like NWA but I can’t abide the bullshit “pussy ass ho’s” and homophobia etc.

Is there a good alternative?

Run the Jewels are known to have nothing but love and praise for the women in their lives.

The one time they wrote a love song they invited a woman on to offer a female perspective on romance.

yeah loads of good stuff. Illinformed is absolutely killing it on the production side of things at the moment.

+1 on quite a lot of stuff up there. One of my favourites is Buck 65. You could argue that he often doesn’t sound much like hip hop, but in a lot of ways he distils my favourite things about hip-hop – borrowing ideas from other genres and telling great stories

Buck 65s Bike for Three collaboration albums he did were great.

And Atmosphere. Loads of great tracks. Like buck 65, very much on the poetic end of the spectrum. Plenty of humour.
