I’m growing tired of the SIDI SPD race shoes I’ve been using for the last decade and find myself yearning for something like the old Nike Poobahs I had in the 90’s. Is there anything comparable now that offers good stiffness but a bit more comfort and warmth than race slippers? Ideally under the £100 mark.

Spesh Rimes might fit that description for you. If not, Northwave and Scott both do a range of approach type shoes that are similar.

    What about Maxic Crossmax?

I sold a pair of them a couple of years ago… wish I’d kept them. 🙁

I’ve got a nearly new set in the garage. 🙂

Hopefully not exactly like Poo Bahs with their snapping sole inserts!

I’m being fussy now Thom but I’m looking for a midway between race shoes and those Giros (although I think they might win when Winter comes round again).

My poobah 2s parted company with their soles last year, they will be missed for commuting.

I got some of these MT71s[/url] last summer and they were hardly off my feet until winter proper set in. (and TBH with overshoes or some sort of gaiter they’d probably be reet but I already have proper winter boots)

I remember those. Great shoes (until the common fault shows itself).

    Shimano MT53 for me.

I got fed up with the crippling effects of ‘race’ shoes when you had a walking section. No bother with a nice pair of bootees.

Loved mine, despite the inevitable failure.

Just to add some colour to this nostalgic thread

Huge fan of its non-bike cousin from the same era

    Mavic Alpine Xl?
Similar to the Crossmax, but cheaper and with a little more give in the sole. Currently about £73 on CRC.

Fairly similar to the Giros mentioned above but Shimano MT91s are excellent. Mavic Alpine XLs or Crossmax might be more what you are looking for though.

Thanks for all the suggestions, I think the Shimano MT53s will fit the bill. I like the Mavics style but the colour makes them a bit Stormtrooper for me (it appears I’m fussier than my Wife when it comes to new shoes).

the original first incarnations of the pooh bars usually failed when the soles split near the cleat, happened to two pairs I had, both replaced by warranty. I thought the issue was fixed in later models and the set I have in the garage are later, I just dont ride them much, they are waiting for the day my spesh shoes die OR a good offer arrives. 😉

Had a pair of those axo boots in both spd and non spd versions…. Like a sponge in the wet…

Original Pony boots were before SPD drilling, IIRC.

Ahhh CFH, had Axo Ponys and Poobahs.

Just died and I replaced them with Mavic Alpine XLs, get 2 sizes larger than normal.

Alpine stars, had the bike? Still have a jersey or two, never even saw the shoes, but they define disco slippers!

I still have a set of PooBahs. The sole material have approximately zero friction.

I’ll dig my old Pony’s out from the depths of the garage and post some pics up if i get time tomorrow.
    They came well before SPDs.

Had my Poobahs sole crack across the cleat and replaced them with Nike Ngubas (I think they were), but they were exchanged for some Shimanos after the soles kept disintegrating as soon as you walked in them. Worse wear than Onza porcupine tyres!

I still have a pair of these somewhere.

As mentioned, the sole is slippery slick!

    Still not as cool as these;

Answer Flatfoot. Although mine (both pairs!) were in the blue/black version. Rubbish soles, as per for the period, but achingly awesome!

Moved on to Scott Tacos not long after. Super cool shoes.
