Cutaways

As a child, I would leaf idly through my father’s copies of Flight, and whenever my eyes landed upon a cutaway, I’d be lost for hours in all the beautiful detail.

They still fascinate.

I can’t be alone, can I?

No your not, always loved them. I found myself googling them recently but it’s not the same as having them in print in your hands.

A bit like OS maps I think in the way you can lose so much time looking at them

I have enjoyably lost far too many hours of my life to aeroplane cutawaways like that. As a kid, I would sometimes look up every number.

Very different style, but Stephen Biesty’s done some nice cutaway stuff, eg :

John Marsden and Frank Munger were my favourites.

For some reason my school library always had Flight and New Scientist. Subscriptions I subsequently carried on.

Best cutaways are still those on early Strats. Every now and then I dig out my first series Relic and spend a lot of time just looking

It’s a good idea that, it’ll be way easier to get the casualty in and our of the helicopter

That is some model. I reckon you’d need steady hands for that.

I did have Saturn 5 Rocket cutaway poster on my bedroom wall as a kiddo.

Was/still am fascinated by space and space travel.

Yup always loved them especially the human body and organ ones.

When I was very young we had a neighbour who built model ships that were cutaways. They were incredible things and in glass cases with a mirrored back to see into the ship.I’d love to know what happened to them. I believe he died a good few years ago now so I hope his children have kept them or found a good home for them.

I used to collect Airplane magazine as a kid – it was £1.50 a week & although I intended on collecting them all, I gave up at 12 binders full – 12 in each binder, as the A-Z of aircraft was still only up to something like M.

I wrote to them & asked if they knew how many issues there were expected to be & they replied saying they didn’t know, so I knocked it on the head.

Anyway – the point is that every magazine had a cut-away for whatever plane they were focusing on that week. I used to examine every detail & sometimes try to find every item listed in the drawing. It still amazes me how they draw these things to that level of detail!

Blimey, there’s people selling them on ebay for £3.99 – if I sold them, that’d be almost £600!! Assuming they sell, that is:

I used to have a Stephen Biesty book as a kid. Spent many hours staring at it.

In fact, I’m at my parent’s house on Sunday. They’d better still have it!

Spent many hours in our local library reading Flight and pouring over the cutaways. At the time I was doing ‘O’ level technical drawing (with pencils and a drawing board) so I had a bit of an understanding about how impressive they are.

Now as I sit here doing stuff in 3D CAD, I cannot image the skill needed to do them. Plus I share a surname with one of the best!

Liking it? I wasn’t sure at first, and considered replacing it. But couldn’t bring myself to.

Oh, you git.

I caught a launch once, purely by chance.  On holiday, we were just going to bed and heard the announcement on the radio.  Drove over to Satellite Beach in the small hours of the morning, truly awesome spectacle in the literal sense of the word.

I love them. Most memorable were the ones of the military vehicle and equipment in my Marshall Cavendish Falklands War series. Sadly I lent it to someone never to get it back.

Wow did you get a free medal stuck to the cover of edition 14? I used to love the free things stuck to the front of the Dandy but back then it only ever seemed to be with the glossy bumper summer edition. Kids these days seem to get a bit of plastic tat every week.

I was going to post some pics of Gunther Von Hagens’ stuff, but decided it would ruin this thread. Keep going with the mechanical stuff…
