Is it worth sticking a Fox coil shock
on a Orange 5 for the rocky trail/downhill sections
as oposed to using the RP23

And is it going to be any better?

i swapped a rubbish swinger 3way for a cheap vanilla RC. bike is miles better.

a good air shock may have had the same effect.

Coils still offer superior performance to air overall but it's just as important to have a dAmper that is set up properly for you and your bike. A well sorted fox vanilla from either mojo or tf (tf can also offer a "Push" after Market tune on the van) will give you more control better grip and thus more speed. But only you can decide if the weight penalty is worth it.
