Now, bear with me. Sorry in advance for this rather self-indulged posting.

I am the very antithesis of a fashionable hipster looking for beard wax recommendations.

Nonetheless, social conventions at work indicate that I should make some effort to tame my barnet as the whole 'rats nest' look isn't conducive to conveying that whole professional image.

I have thick wavyish hair which has a tendency to curl. It's cut in a short back and sides, longish parting on the top sort of job. Until recently I've been using VO5 matt clay, but when the hair gets longer it leaves it looking rather greasy. I've tried Fish Soho paste, Fructis surfwax and a few others, but most either look too greasy, or don't have sufficient hold, or both.

I'm looking for some product that will have a strong hold but that isn't too greasy-looking. Waxes and the like have the hold, but are too greasy. The best so far has been Muk paste, but it's hella expensive.

Does anyone have any recommendations beyond Brylcreem, chip fat, hair gel and other sarcastic comments?

Percy Nobleman matt paste here. Very good hold once set, but I tend to scrub it out a bit once dry, just because I don't like the crispy dried gel sort of feel. Key is not to use too much of it though.

They also make a matt clay, but for me this one leaves hair feeling a bit greasy, so only used when I have a shorter cut.

I use Trevor Sorbie Moulding Mud

Not the cheapest but it's the only one I really like – does't clog up my hair and can be reshaped easily. And washes out of hair (and hands) very easily. The original 'mix' was far superior but unfortunately it is no longer available, still I find this the best around.

Also available in Boots.

After years of a No1 all over I've grown my hair over the past 6 months. I have really thick, wavy hair and this stuff is just brilliant to keep it under control.

Thanks all, some good recommendations.

Bikebouy, I'm sure it'd be fine, but it's becoming increasingly difficult to track Ben Stiller down in order to get the necessary quantities of product.

+1 for fudge, various different grades of hold, try until find one you like (buy sample pots on eBay, cheaper than high street)

I misread the title as "Chipp's hair styling gunk recommendations".

Fudge. It's what all the other hair waxes try and fail to be. I find the one that suits me best is their rocker wax.

After decades of messing around with most of the above suggestions I finally found ( and will stick with) this stuff.

Smells lovely, feels nice on hair/skin, doesn't get clumpy or sticky and washes out easily.

Another for fudge. I use the hair shaper, apply to wet hair for a shiny look, apply it to dry hair for a matt look. Easy. A pot lasts me a year. Remember, even though it’s called fudge and smells like sweets, you can’t eat it.

Currently using got2be from tescos, it's OK, that fudge sounds interesting but a bit pricey.
