    bit of helicopter tape where you get heel rub or chain bounce – yes.

    big neoprene sock – no.

    Both:

    PU tape (aka helitape).
    Then use a thicker protector such as neoprene or innertube.

    Tube/neoprene will protect properly against chain slap. PU tape will protect the carbon fibre against abrasion of dirt that will get trapped.

    edit: missed the road bike bit…just PU tape is fine on a road bike normally but I would probably double it up on top as thicker will work a lot better.

    Well, I spotted some grease on there, and although it could have come from anywhere in the interest of preserving carbon loveliness I’ve stuck a bit of helitape on.
