Done a lot of jobs in my time, from customer services to labouring to shop work to admin. Always preferred the more hands on stuff. For the last 6/7 years been doing accounts work in a small office, but it's like a dynastic family (no room for progression unless someone dies) and I really can't stand working in an office anymore.

Circumstances have changed and I can afford a pay cut, looking at doing mechanics course (know most of it as do my own stuff but need the bit of paper!) and working in a shop as a way of getting 'into the industry'.

Just wondering if it's worth waiting an extra month to do Cycle Systems Academy Level 2 over Cytech 2? It says on Cycle Systems site you can use their course as points towards engineering degree (which I'm looking at in near future too), but you can't with Cytech, is this right?

A friend did the Cytech recently over City & Guilds as it's the qualification bike shops recognize. He had a real mix on his course, many like you just fed up with a dull office job. One guy was a Tornado Navigator who was setting up a B&B with bike hire having decidesd to retire from the RAF.

As a shop owner I would accept either, but would like to see real world experience. Its very different working on a never risen workshop bike compared to a badly abused commuter that a home mechanic has fiddled with. Contact a couple of shops locally to you and see if they will give you some unpaid work experience. You may hate it and a grand is a lot of money to waste.
