I'm looking at doing some training over the winter with a view to doing some xc races next year.

I've just returned to mountain biking after a couple of years, and had a go round ftd before work this morning. Hopefully i'll get over there once a week with the view to using the trail to bench mark my fitness/speed.

I was just wondering how fast is considered fast? (for a 31 year old hoping to compete in sport category)

To do well in XC races I'd reckon you'd probably need to be able to maintain maybe [grabs figure out of thin air/] about 15-16mph* over a couple of hours, and probably still be able to sprint on top of that.

*I've no real idea...might be more

Snakebite holds the locals record of 24 minutes iirc , only Liam Killean has been quicker. INCUDING the Monkey is still under an hour for Snakey.

He has Thighs of Mighty Oak and 2011 XTR.

24 mins average pace, train once or twice during the week you should be able to do sub 22mins for a lap of FTD.

I once did FTD (without diversions) in the low 30's, but back then I was fit 🙁

Sorry the 24 mins was the old route which was longer. Not sure what he's lapping the new route in, but he is the fatest local.

24 minutes! **** me

I didn't time myself this morning, but it was probably double that!

Is Snakey an elite racer?

I did a sub 20mins once after 3 cheese and ham oatcakes and a litre of panda cola.

Snakebite's time was just after the cannock cobbles had been polished too.

Not really, its the climbing and flat where you make your time up, more tech riders can grab a bit on the upper and lower cliffe sections, but most elite riders nowadys can hold their own on that type of stuff. And it was 23 minutes for the record.

the muscles pushed the hair out.....

actually, you can only have legs massaged during a race if they are clean, I had them massaged as I had some cramp going on and a big race the week after.

lots of riding and armwork, plus, we have a big bridge at work, I do a lot of bridgework. its tough and some people dont like it, but I find it 'fun'

45 mins is what I manage the current FTD route. im looking at around 2 hours for the monkey too.

Surely the old route was much shorter.

To be fair Snakey lives to ride, most people think he's an elitist ****t but once you get to know him he is bearable.

Can't deny he's quick though credit to him as he hit 50 just last week.

Don't aim to hit the low to mid 20's it's just so unlikley for most regular riders. Pulling in a low 30's is a very respectable achievement for most of us, bang in a couple of chat stops and 45 minutes is the norm.

Wow - 23mins is very fast!!
Old FTD for me was 35mins
Monkey trail in 1hr 27mins.

i have been riding cannock for about 2o years , funny thing is i never see all these super fast riders , when do you ride ?

The only time I've seen the fast people is when its quiet, early morning late evening.

Out of interest - anyone got a time for FTD or Monkey in the Dark??
pps - is there any club/group evening rides?

jumping flea, why not drop Snakey a line, he might let you audition for the Thursday clique.

The only time I've seen the fast people is when its quiet, early morning late evening.

I only visit Cannock TC on weekdays and have certainly seen a few 'team lycra riders' on various occasions.
I'm no superfit rider but can do both the Dog & Monkey in about 1:30 mins to 1:45 if I'm feeling fit, can't do that time on my full susser though, only the HT and the traction of dry dusty summer helps. Perhaps worth mentioning, I also usually ride the whole lot with the saddle down slightly and can't be bothered stopping to adjust, it's not a race for me, just a pootler.

But I agree with you, the fast riders DO exist at cannock. I've seen plenty of guys usually in matching lycra that not only set a fast pace, also have the skills to deal with the monkey in spite of the fact their saddles seem to be 6 feet in the air.

I don't often get overtaken by fellow baggy short wearing backpack types like me, (although there are some much fitter and slimmer guys that do) but guys that look like they are dedicated to cycling road or offroad, yes they are about.

What sort of times are people putting in on hillier/rougher trail center loops?

Like MBR @ Coed-y-Brenin for example?

Personally I'd say to do very well in XC you'd be looking at averaging 22km an hour, mid ground more like 18km an hour

I can do both Dog and Monkey in about 1:30 inculing stopping to Alter suspension and Tyre pressures for the Werewolves Gentle slope 🙂

I'm an Elite XC racer too, not got near 24mins.
Singlespeed hardtail with Conti Speedkings in the wet is the only timed lap I've done, that was 33min28.
Bit disapointed with my time, is that 24min including the extra bit on the other side of the road?

My best time for Follow Your Dad and Monkey is only 1hr 40. But that included changing my tyres for the werewolf slope and waving to the crowds in the temp stands they have there at the weekend.
