The local shop wants fifty quid to fix the power supply problem on my ACER ASPIRE 1690 so I decided to look into the problem myself...

It seems that the offending component is this: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ACER-ASPIRE-16...#ht_2379wt_907

...and at only four quid, i thought it might be worth me trying to do it myself. Has anyone done this before? Got and advice?

Cheers,

Hmmm, going on your hyperlinking skillz it might be a good idea to get the shop to do it.

🙂

Haha. Trust me, it IS 50quid's labour. Take the entire thing apart, (everything apart, screen off and everything), desolder the part, and resolder the new one on, reassemble everything, wonder where all these extra parts that don't fit in go?

There are youtube videos of it done - they're long and very speeded up.... Watch one carefully and think about whether you really trust yourself to do it all properly 🙂

PS. It's called a "DC Jack/Socket" if you want to googlize it.

I've replaced stuff on laptops before ( fans, processor, and less successfully a screen ). It is generally not that hard if you have a bit of common sense, a set of watchmakers screwdrivers and a workshop manual.

From what I've seen , it looks quite a bit more difficult than screen replacement! (I'm not great at soldering though)
I only know about it because I'm considering doing the same repair on our old laptop with a cracked DC jack. I'll probably do the disassembly and reassembly, and get a mate to desolder/solder it for me.

Having watched a video on youtube and read the above, add a soldering iron, solder, de-soldering pump and a steady hand to the list of things that you will need.

🙁

If lcs will do it for £50.00, I would reccomend you get them to do it. That is a very good price for an absolute faff of a job!

I charge £70.00 for the same job, and consider that underpriced!

My mate just bricked his Dell Axim because of a 'simple soldering job' that he thought he could do himself... NOT WORTH IT!
