I'm relatively new to road bikes and now I realise that a compact chainset isn't right for me I want to replace the inner chainring with a 42T. I ordered one but it turned out to have the wrong bolt spacing. Can anyone advise on what I should be looking for , it's a 2007 Veloce set (price is definately a consideration if there are bargains out there).

Perhaps go for a smaller cassette instead. Might work out cheaper.
