Is it just Bristol, but the current trend seems to be riding bikes without brakes. I was going to say 'kids' riding, but on Saturday saw a couple of blokes riding their BMX's down Gloucester Rd without any brakes fitted. I've seen more and more of this in the last few months - is it fashion now? I remember down to one brake when I was a kid, but that didn't last long.

Its been "the done thing" in bmx for ages. I think the main reason is that it stops you pussying out of things, as if you're speeding towards something you can't stop, so you just have to MTFU and do it!

U-brakes are also a pain in the arse to set up well so I guess a lot of people can't be bothered. And brakeless bmxes look really nice and clean.

Personally I don't like it on my bmx as I don't feel at all in control and end up riding everywhere really slowly so I know I can stop if I need to. 1 rear brake has always been my preference, don't really need a front on a bmx and it looks messy.

Brakeless on the road or one brake is also illegal unless riding fixed so in the event of an accident you would be unlikely to get compensation ,or conversely liable to a claim against you

I'm sure that is a major concern of most bmx riders.

Are BMXer's perhaps using a coaster rear brake?

I did the Manchester 100 last year and there was a small group of blokes on full on track bikes doing riding. No brakes and acting like complete cocks in the traffic through Nantwich. Really took the edge off me feeling sorry for them when a little while later I passed them and two had crashed into each other. One was shaking like a sh!££ing dog and sat in a ditch.
