Planning to dip my toe in the world of bikepacking this weekend by attempting the Brecon Beacons route in bikepacking.com. Thunderstorms are forecast for Sunday afternoon. Will I die from a lightning strike? What to practically do if caught on the trails with no shelter?

Hide under a rock if you can find one.

Getting soaking wet is going to be a bigger problem for you if the storms come in as forecasted. It’s pretty bleak up there.

stay away from water and sit it out somewhere low down like a ditch, make sure you are not the highest thing around.
if you can though and spot it early try to ride away from it.

Don’t stand on the top of hill holding your bike in the air.

    Thunderstorms are forecast

Anyone else see the flaw in this plan? How about moving your first trip to a weekend with better weather?

I’m currently having this discussion with myself. I was planning a three day trip into wales this weekend, but the thunderstorms and flash flooding mean I am making backup plans. I will see how the forecast pans out through the week and make my decision on Thursday.

Depend on how much you want to endure foul weather V enjoy a nice weather window…

I spent last night at 650m in the Dales under a mini tarp: strobe lightning, continuous thunder and hammering rain from 23:00 until dawn. Great fun! But not on your first trip. Work the odds in your favour.

Not backpacking, but originally I had plans of returning to Prestatyn this Thursday to tackle Road To Hell climb from Denbigh this weekend, after a freehub failure last month scuppered that attempt…

But within days of getting home, a back abscess had other ideas and I won’t be getting sweaty on a bike for at least another week.

Originally quite gutted, but I’ve now seen the weather forecast, no way would I attempt it this weekend. Looks like I’m relying on good weather in early October.
