So, bib shorts were recommended.
I bought some.
According to the manufacturers sizing guide, I am less than medium in:
Leg length, waist and hip.
I wanted some room to manoeuvre so I went for large.

They are too tight. But only in a couple of places.
Round my thigh. I think I have bigger thighs.
They are too short. When I put them on over my shoulders, they make me talk a little high pitched.

My question is, do they get bigger all over?
As in, if I get an xl will they be longer in the body and also bigger round the thigh?
The only measurements given are chest, waist, hip and inseam.

A lot depends on the make - what brand?

As above, sounds like you need to experiment with a few brands. I've had some fit well all over, some just aren't proportioned correctly (which sounds odd for something so stretchy).

Ah, does it?
So, it isn't a general thing then.
Castelli they are.

Castelli is sized for racing snakes.

Try Lusso, realistic British sizing and fully manufactured in Manchester; their bib shorts, 3/4 bibs and longs are excellent.

Castelli sizing is very "Italian". I'm a small in most brands and barely fit in a medium Castelli.

Also "I wanted some room to manoeuvre so I went for large." it's lycra, you want it snug or it'll be hellish

I size up in Castelli, Medium in UK sized stuff, large in Castelli, for reference I'm 5'11" and don't find their stuff too short.

The last thing you want is the moving around as that will only cause irritation.

Man, I hate shopping.
So, just ignore their sizing guides?

Do racing snakes have skinny legs too?
As well as short torsos?

If it is complicated, I can add more material to straps I guess.
So how does one find out what shape one is?
Or is it just a case of keep buying stuff randomly and hope?

I have never generally gone around comparing myself to other naked guys.

(No I don't want pics, thanks)

Also worth mentioning that bib straps that seem slightly too tight when you're stood up (often the case with higher end stuff) may be perfect when you're actually on the bike. You need to consider how stuff fits when you're actually in a cycling position.

I'm 6'4" and find Castelli in large fits fine.

I am only 5'7-5'8, but I have measured my torso length vs a bunch of other guys re bike sizing.
My torso is the same as guys that stand at 5'10 - 5'11" (short limbs)

I have a medium waist I think but I think big thighs.
(Jeans were a nightmare when they were skinny fit.)

The large fits fine round the mid region. Pretty comfy even.
I reckon the sizing chart for that section seems right.

I mean how much pressure should they have on your shoulders?

So, would Lusso have bigger legs?

You know what, I hadn't thought of that.
I don't think I have ever ridden with the straps on.
It is uncomfy so I use them with the straps off.

Good point, I will give it a go. Thanks.
Just need to sort legs now.

The Carbon Bib Shorts are excellent.

Careful with Lusso. They can come up a size smaller than you would expect. In everything else I am large; on or off the bike. With Lusso I am extra large.

Their website does have a size chart which seems accurate for thier clothing.

Castelli they are.

I take a large in Castelli bibs, all my other kit is medium.

My Lusso shorts are uncomfortable and size up too big.

They should be tight when you are stood upright - means they are fitting nicely when you are hunched over on the bike rather than slack (road bike this is)

Also, they often should be tight on the thighs as they more supportive, like compression clothing.

I wear Castelli and Sportful shorts and they all are ridiculously comfortable when riding, but like you, are slightly tight when stood bolt upright. They are also tight on my thighs.

I've looked at (admittedly not Castelli) size guides and thought, Medium or Large at a push. Sometimes they'd even point me at a Small (5' 9" and bit, skinny but solid legs). There were bib shorts I could't get past my knees - just ran out of give.

I tend to relent and accept I'm a Large - sometimes Medium is just about doable but they're less for racing and more just decent shorts, so I roll and go a size larger.

Endura, Rapha and Morvelo have all been good. dhb just don't quite work out as well for some reason.

+1

They’re true to their size guide(not just me other workmates)but they’re built for racing so tight for aero and as said they’re also cut for on the bike position.
