That’s an excellent riff on 2001.

This was always either going to be a cringeworthy corporate train wreck or gloriously bonkers and way better than it had any right to be (a la Lego movie).

If it’s the latter then fair play to them.

Greta Gerwig directing so I’m not totally sure what film you’re expecting.

Indeedy I doubt Margot Robbie or Ryan Gosling need the money or have been pushed into doing this, so can only hope it’s good… If you watch the trailer, it’s taken it lead from the 2001 start sequence but with a 30 ft tall ‘barbie’, it does kinda bode to being not exactly serious BUT this is the 2nd largest toy manufacturer in the world, I do wonder how much fun it will be.

You would hope that it has looked at Lego and realised that taking the piss out of itself is the only way to go. Remember it allowed quite a dark depiction of Barbie and Ken in the Toy Story movies.

Due to having kids I watched the Barbie’s Dream house series, it was brilliant. Not so much a case of jokes for all ages, I’m not even sure what was in it for kids. It was mostly just ripping the piss out of everything.

I hope this film is along similar lines.

Barbie Island and tour guide Barbie from Toy Story 2 is one of my favourite bits of film ever.

I think it’s also a nod to Attack of the 50 foot Woman.

Dunno what is, but apart from the director being Greta Gerwig, can’t say I’m that intrigued by the prospect.

I dunno – Ryan Gosling as Ken?

The signs are good that it could be a great bit of escapism, if they don’t try and be too clever or corporate with it!

God knows we need some bubblegum escapism right now.

It’ll take a lot of convincing for me to deliberately watch.

As a father of two girls I’ve had to watch a fair few Barbie films back in the day, and TBH they weren’t actually that bad. Nothing like as saccharine as you’d have thought. No idea if the film will be any good, but the trailer’s excellent 😀

my wife took my daughter to see Barbie, they enjoyed it but said the audience was entirely women, except for two guys, one of whom kept interrupting the movie so he could explain to his girlfriend what the movie was about.

Isn’t on part of the movies making fun at men explaining films to women*.

    * I’ve not seen the film but have seen comments about this.

As the father of two girls I have a similar experience, and I went to see Barbie with them (and my wife) last week.

This film is not the same as all the previous ‘Barbie’ media, I’d say it has a better message about womanhood, motherhood and contains some useful input for men. It made my wife cry (but then lots of films do that).

I saw it on the opening weekend while on holiday in Inverness – thoroughly enjoyed it, in so small part because most of the audience had dressed for the occasion. The only bad part was that I caught COVID from someone there, but that’s hardly Greta Gerwig’s fault.
