[Closed] 11s cassette on 10s hub

Can't be done, right? 11s cassette is about 1.8mm wider than a 10s freehub. Previously I'd just taken out one sprocket (14t) and use the 11s groupset in 10s mode, but with a 32t cassette that would leave a bit too much of a gap.

I've just shaved off about 1.8mm from the alu carrier of a 105 11-32 5800 cassette. Took about 5 mins and means those good but outdated 10s wheels are no longer obsolete 😀

Happy to do this for others if anyone's interested - obviously with no liability if it bursts into flames/makes you crash/destroys your bike...

I thought the latest 11spd 105 has been made to fit the 10spd hub?

Yeah, it's all road stuff, though older MTB freehubs are also narrower than newer ones (this is going on a Hope XC hub). I've no idea about 11s MTB stuff I'm afraid.

MTB 8,9,10 and Shimano 11 spd all fit on the same freehub width.

I’m planning on fitting 11sp 105 to my 10sp freehub over the weekend. After a bit of reading I was expecting to just have to remove the 11T and run it as 10sp? I never use the 11T anyway

P20 - yup, both the new 105 and Ultegra 11-34 11 speed cassettes fit 10spd Road freehubs. Tighter spreads only fit 11 spd freehubs as they would otherwise risk chain/spoke interference.

Mowgli - guessing 32T should be OK on most hubs re spoke clearance, but any guesstimate at what size it might become an issue?

In the long run it's easier to take that 1.8mm off the freehub. Done that to several Hope XC hubs and also numerous Shimano ones. Quicker to use a files than set a lathe up and fiddle with it bouncing around.

I don't know, it was literally five minutes from sticking it in the chuck to deburring the edges. I guess I did have the right tool mounted already. I'd rather machine a soft alu cassette which is essentially a consumble rather than trying to mangle my nice Ti freehub with a file.

Seems odd that they've almost backtracked by making the newer 11s 105 and Ultegra cassettes narrower again now.

I wouldn't like to guess on minimum tooth count for this to work - I don't have any others to hand to check. There's plenty of clearance on the 32.

For the record, i fitted an 11sp 105 cassette on to my 10sp free hub today, no issues at all. Pleasantly surprised

Interesting. What type of 105, and which hub?

With my limited knowledge, it’s the standard 9/10sp freehub that came on my mk2 Escapade, and the 105 5800 32-11 cassette that came on my 2015 Giant Defy. There was a small spacer behind the 9sp Sora 32-11 cassette which I obviously removed
