Been listening to Zane Lowe doing the breakfast show on Radio 1 this morning. No silly chat, great mix of music, interesting guest. What are the odds of Zane being installed as the breakfast show host? More of the same please.

Slim to none.

The average moron enjoys the inane drivel of Mawllsey

Quite a surprise to get a Slipknot interview, Anthrax v Public Enemy and some RATM on the way to work this morning.

Radio 1 can only do shows like that in the short term or out of the important listening hours for some reason. All their best programmes are on weeknights after 7pm so enjoy Zane while it lasts.

On the plus side iPlayer has yesterday's breakfast show on it... happy days.

Isn't it something like 'in new music we trust' or 'new music takeover' for the week?

Annie Mac was on yesterday at some point when I had the radio on playing some 'filthy dubstep' apparently.

I like the lack of idle chit-chat & the amount of music, but find some of it a bit 'intense' for my morning commute.

almost broke the radio trying to turn it off in such a hurry. Metal is not the preffered choice of wake up music in the millhouse household (although it is a little later in the day)

It was great to hear Zane on the way to work instead of the usual annoying drivel.

Only problem is, he won't be on the radio for the journey home this evening.....

I find listening to Radio one akin to having my brain scooped out buy a spoon whittled by a paraplegic Ray Mears fan. It is only surpassed in it's poor quality output by Radio Solent.

This week is a way for Radio 1 to promote the specialist music shows, I'm really liking it, was great to be able to listen to the rock show live rather than on Iplayer last night, and went to bed with the punk show in the background.

Good to have Zane on this morning, although TBH anything seems pleasant in comparison to Richard Madely

I saw Zane do a DJ set a couple of years ago, was a top night. I dislike Chris Moyles with a passion, the sooner he's kicked off radio 1 the better.

I like Moyles and am used to the tripe he sometimes spouts off but I'm not sure I like being woken up by the sound of emtal in the mornings. Took me back to my uni days a bit but did find myself hitting Heart on the drive in to work this morning. Zane is an awesome DJ though and much better than Moyles but think there are particular times of day that he shouldn't be on radio.

whilst zane lowe is generally good i that his 'love' for all music is nausiating. slip not are utter sh!t£. the broad range of music he plays makes me think that he could possibly be as much an annoying ****t as moyles. infact zane low is generally sh!t£ too. whenever i listen to his normal show i find that i think one in two or less of the songs he plays are worth the air time they recieve. as in 1 good song followed by some utter pish. still both moyles and low are better than real/magic/virgin; pretty much any other commercial radio station.

Zane Lowe is infinitely preferable to Moyles, but you still wouldn't want to be stuck in a lift with him, would you?

basically they're both over hyped by radio 1. no lowe is not the new peel. because peel sounded decidedly unexited by the music he was playing whilst being actually very excited and interested by the music he was playing; whereas i suspect the reverse of this is true for zane lowe.

I like Moyles precisely because i can turn my brain off. I listen to Today until a politician comes on, then switch to radio 1. But then my views - like most posters on this thread i suspect - because the radio 1 breakfast show isn't aimed at me. The target audience is something like 16-24 year olds, and it does very well at attracting those listeners.

Had to turn over from Radio 1 today, Zane bored me, then i made the mistake of turning back to discover Nick Grimshaw on.

How dull is Grimshaw, what a k*ob, i would rather sing to myself than listen to him.

Bring back Moyles , Cotton, James and Mills to help me pass my day

Zane Lowe may be one of the few DJs left at Radio 1 who gets a decent timeslot with a genuine interest in music, but he's still full of himself and a bit too much into his metal. Comes of being antipodean/a bit odd, I think...
Still, another XFM graduate doing well for himself at the BBC, and he is preferable to Moyles (in the same way that losing your tackle in an accident is preferable to losing your tackle in an accident and being kicked in the shin).

On a positive note, that Huw guy was quite good yesterday afternoon.

Bit more laidback than Zane Lowe. Listening to him is like being cornered by a muso geek on coke at a party.

no Alex I'm 35, but its a damn site better than Radio 1, and they do at least play a variety of tolerable modern day and older music with minimal Brummie banter.
I cant stand Chris Moyles find him anally childish and egotistical.
I used to listen to Terry Wogan but also not a huge fan of Chris Evans so thats Radio 2 out. I prefer music in the mornings to talking so 4, 5 and Talk Sport rarely get a listen My local radio - RAM Fm is complete toss and Radio Derby is just a big miserable moaning phone-in so its the best of a very bad bunch and given my commute isnt that long it really doesnt bother me too much

But before you (a Radio 1 listener FFS) go slagging other people off for their '14 year old' music choice maybe you could learn to post in something more grown up than the 'txt type' of your original post?
Tip for your forthcoming 11-plus English exam - a full stop is normally followed by a capital letter and it's not spelt 'unexited' 😉

it wasn't text type. i agree generally with correct punctuation but to be honest its lazyness and its a mountain bike forum. i know i can't spell i have always struggled but then i am not an english graduate i am an engineering graduate. i do make alot more effort when writting a report. oh an iain i guess being from derby explains the love/like of kerrang fm! 🙂

Im not from Derby though, I just live here, not particuarly by choice 😥
There is no love/like of Kerrang. Just a dislike and contempt of Moyles/Cotton/Grimshaw/James/Cotton/Nihal/Moyles/Whiley/Bowman and the Radio One playlist and music policy in general. Quite often one show will finish with a particular song and then 10 minutes later the next presenter will play the same song again. Oh and did I mention Moyles and Cotton both of them make me want to put my foot through the radio and as for that Bowman and Whiley.....
Radio One went down the pan with the departure of Mark and Lard

well its quite clear that i don't type like that. marc and lard were the best presenters on radio one; we can agree on that. kerrang is still bobbins though and no amount of unreasoned argument can change that fact. you should also look at your anger issues. breathe and count to ten.

Those having a go at Jo Whiley seem to have forgotten that she started off doing a terrific evening show with Steve Lamack. It was only after she was 'promoted' to a daytime slot with enforced playlist that she stopped being interesting. Daytime Radio 1 is a total music vacuum, devoid of anything with any significant merit.

I tried listening to it this morning. Utter crap.

Some of the questions asked were. "Who do you fancy", "What was the first music you bought"

Too many people trying to act cool and be cool. At 6:30 in the morning you just want music that doesnt challenge, and conversation thats not in your face. Moyles can be irritating at times, but at least he has adult conversation and doesnt feel the need to pretend to be cool as at 6:30 in the morning.

Well, I've listened to the B'fast show this morning for the first time with Zane and it was brilliant. Will be 'tuning' in again if he stays onair but not that twonk Moyles. Even my kids avoid Moyles. I'm about 30yrs over the demographic but I'll get on down wiv the kids on this.

D&B at the end of the 90's was about these boys for me. Ideally with Mampi Swift or Ray Kieth on the decks. Christ I've just remembered Palmer the Chalmer... one of the most depraved people to take to the mic.

In terms of irritation, for me it goes
1. Moyles
2. Zane Lowe
3. Westwood
4. That Scottish woman who's name escapes me

Lowe plays some good music, but by christ is he a complete twonk.
So I'll stick with me iPod in the car.

I enjoy the Moyles show FWIW - light and entertaining first thing in the morning works for me.

But ZL's show the last couple of days has been great actually - He is a bit OTT but IMO he has a very infectious enthusiasm for music of all sorts which makes it all very enjoyable. His evening shows have always been good though I don't listen to them all that often but it'd be great if he had maybe a once a week morning session. It's not going to happen, mind but there you go.

Can anyone recommend anything similar on in the mornings?

I can't listen to Chris Moyles. I find he grates on nearly every level possible. The music is shit, he's embarrassingly annoying and only funny about 5% of the time. How people can call it 'light and entertaining' is beyond me - it'd turn me into a road-raging fool (even more than I already am) if I listened to him every day as I seeth at his general foolishness (still, I suppose that explains most white van drivers...)

However, Zane this morning was excellent - liked him since he was on XFM (when it had credibility). Radio 1 would have a new listener here if he stayed. Looking forward to Mike D tomorrow.

i think bukam got a bit of a unfounded name as being light weight. some of his tunes though melodious were propper bass rippers. i liked origin unknown (andyc & peshay) before they became the ram trilogy. also love ellis dee and johnny jungle and phuture assassins. although they were both a little before my time.

also didn't alex reece also fall into the melodious light weight dnb catagory?

wow i thought it was only school kids that argued about music choices and DJ's etc....

zane lowe or however its spelt admits that he doesnt like all the music he plays... hence using the phrase "you've gotta respect what they're doing" when he's not keen on a track.

Caught half an hour of Zane this morning. Quite enjoyed it, despite wanting to stab Adele every time she opened her mouth. I'm sure she can sing but my god, her speaking voice grates.

Don't mind Moyles so much these days; he was an obnoxious git when he first started on R1 and I couldn't abide the odious twerp, however he seems to have sorted his act out a lot.

Westwood is possibly the single most annoying man ever to grace radio. I cannot, cannot listen to him for more than about 30 seconds. Is he like that all the time? He must be murder at breakfast, "COMING AT YOU RIGHT NOW, FAST AND HARD JUST THE WAY YOU LIKE IT, IT'S THE TOAST!!"

The rest of Radio 1 just merges into one amorphous lump for me, I'd be hard pressed to tell one show or DJ from another. Thank $deity for in-car DAB.

OK, since we're mostly agreed that Moyles is rubbish, who do you lot think should get the gig?

Bearing in mind that it's supposed to be for youngish people.

That Annie Mac sounds quite chirpy and I can take or leave the dubstep (which they probably wouldn't let her play), so she might be a good choice.

I really would like to see Zane take over. I quite like Moyles' style but he is too old for Radio 1 (has been there too long as well) and is being tipped to go back to Capital Radio once Capital goes nationwide. I think Annie Mac would be great as well but if either Annie or Zane got the job I guess they would have to tow the R1 playlist line. I would like to see R1 be brave and allow someone like Annie/Zane do their own thing musically (to a degree) and move away from the celeb obsessed R1 style they have at the moment. BTW I'm really too old to be listening to R1.

I think Zane is realistically too 'cutting edge' for breakfast, as much as I like what he plays.

Annie Mac or someone like Fearn Cotton could work - both personable and love new music. The rest of their DJs come across as rather bland and blur into one another, so I couldn't name a viable alternative.

fern cotton is as awful as jo whiley was

sucking up to artists/bands annoys me

at least chris moyles has the guts to say live on air when he doesnt like a song or a guest... and will adjust the playlist during the show to play songs he prefers.

in the end they're all there to fill in the gaps between songs, certain times of the day will have different playlists and DJ's have to play a certain amount of tracks and tick certain songs off a list during their show.... if only my car had spotify!

While that might be technically accurate, a good radio DJ should be the reason for the listener to tune in really - and breakfast shows traditionally have quite a high chat content.

Terry Wogan is the perfect example of what I mean. There's no reason someone shouldn't be just as listenable on R1 - it just needs the right personality.

I've just had the slightly chilling realization that George Lamb is probably going to end up with the job. Not that I hate him as much as most 6music listeners do.

Zane Lowe on Radio 1 this morning was class, I heard a brilliant tune this morning, Fu-Schnickens Ring The Alarm

Much better than Chris bloody Moyles

I'd actually like DJs to play music that isn't just what's in the charts. From occasional snippets of Moyles he seems to not at all like a lot of what he plays and that shows with all the other crap on his show.

Zane is a bit much sometimes but at least he seems to care about his output on the radio and is given some freedom to play more than just the playlist. I remember Lauren Laverne had a similar deal when she did the XFM breakfast show and that was the last time that particular program was any good.

So maybe he doesn't play ideal morning music and can grate but there's some genuine passion (and not just for the payday unlike Moyles). I also liked the Fu-Schnickens today... real blast from the past.

Finally...

He must be murder at breakfast, "COMING AT YOU RIGHT NOW, FAST AND HARD JUST THE WAY YOU LIKE IT, IT'S THE TOAST!!"

One of the best things I've seen written on the forum for a while

Adjust the playlist, fill between songs, certain amount of tracks....

He only bloody well plays about 5 songs all show and fills the rest talking about himself. He's as bad, if not worse than Wiley when it comes to sucking up to guests too - just does it in a different manner, which usually consists of trying to make himself look witty into the bargain.
