I was listening again on the way to work this morning and genuinely had a smile on my face with some of the music he was playing. And I'm really not a morning person 🙂

Still, back to Radio 2/4 next week I suppose 🙁

Well, I've listened to the B'fast show this morning for the first time with Zane and it was brilliant. Will be 'tuning' in again if he stays onair but not that twonk Moyles. Even my kids avoid Moyles. I'm about 30yrs over the demographic but I'll get on down wiv the kids on this.

D&B at the end of the 90's was about these boys for me. Ideally with Mampi Swift or Ray Kieth on the decks. Christ I've just remembered Palmer the Chalmer... one of the most depraved people to take to the mic.

In terms of irritation, for me it goes
1. Moyles
2. Zane Lowe
3. Westwood
4. That Scottish woman who's name escapes me

Lowe plays some good music, but by christ is he a complete twonk.
So I'll stick with me iPod in the car.

I enjoy the Moyles show FWIW - light and entertaining first thing in the morning works for me.

But ZL's show the last couple of days has been great actually - He is a bit OTT but IMO he has a very infectious enthusiasm for music of all sorts which makes it all very enjoyable. His evening shows have always been good though I don't listen to them all that often but it'd be great if he had maybe a once a week morning session. It's not going to happen, mind but there you go.

Can anyone recommend anything similar on in the mornings?

Some of you should try listening to Magic FM instead, it might calm you down a bit.

I can't listen to Chris Moyles. I find he grates on nearly every level possible. The music is shit, he's embarrassingly annoying and only funny about 5% of the time. How people can call it 'light and entertaining' is beyond me - it'd turn me into a road-raging fool (even more than I already am) if I listened to him every day as I seeth at his general foolishness (still, I suppose that explains most white van drivers...)

However, Zane this morning was excellent - liked him since he was on XFM (when it had credibility). Radio 1 would have a new listener here if he stayed. Looking forward to Mike D tomorrow.

Give me a list of everything you like Neil and I'm sure I could say the same back 😉

BR to Baa Kidd Kay BTW...

i think bukam got a bit of a unfounded name as being light weight. some of his tunes though melodious were propper bass rippers. i liked origin unknown (andyc & peshay) before they became the ram trilogy. also love ellis dee and johnny jungle and phuture assassins. although they were both a little before my time.

also didn't alex reece also fall into the melodious light weight dnb catagory?

wow i thought it was only school kids that argued about music choices and DJ's etc....

zane lowe or however its spelt admits that he doesnt like all the music he plays... hence using the phrase "you've gotta respect what they're doing" when he's not keen on a track.

Caught half an hour of Zane this morning. Quite enjoyed it, despite wanting to stab Adele every time she opened her mouth. I'm sure she can sing but my god, her speaking voice grates.

Don't mind Moyles so much these days; he was an obnoxious git when he first started on R1 and I couldn't abide the odious twerp, however he seems to have sorted his act out a lot.

Westwood is possibly the single most annoying man ever to grace radio. I cannot, cannot listen to him for more than about 30 seconds. Is he like that all the time? He must be murder at breakfast, "COMING AT YOU RIGHT NOW, FAST AND HARD JUST THE WAY YOU LIKE IT, IT'S THE TOAST!!"

The rest of Radio 1 just merges into one amorphous lump for me, I'd be hard pressed to tell one show or DJ from another. Thank $deity for in-car DAB.

alex222 get yourself over on to the jungalist soldier thread!

Yeah I'll give you that about Alex Reece. But Pulp Friction is an absolute classic. For me it was more about who was spinning the records and even more about who was on the Mic.

BR to Baa Kidd Kay BTW...

Baa Kid Kay was actually based on that reknowned rapper Ya Kidd K. He still pops up occasionally from under his bridge.

(Baa, not Ya - after the Turtles film I'm not sure where he went...)

And Dylan, I like whatever you don't. 😉

Moyles can be irritating at times, but at least he has adult conversation ...

eh? I've not been tuning in, but I never heard Moyles have an adult conversation - it all appears to be taking the P out of his studio crowd

OK, since we're mostly agreed that Moyles is rubbish, who do you lot think should get the gig?

Bearing in mind that it's supposed to be for youngish people.

That Annie Mac sounds quite chirpy and I can take or leave the dubstep (which they probably wouldn't let her play), so she might be a good choice.

I really would like to see Zane take over. I quite like Moyles' style but he is too old for Radio 1 (has been there too long as well) and is being tipped to go back to Capital Radio once Capital goes nationwide. I think Annie Mac would be great as well but if either Annie or Zane got the job I guess they would have to tow the R1 playlist line. I would like to see R1 be brave and allow someone like Annie/Zane do their own thing musically (to a degree) and move away from the celeb obsessed R1 style they have at the moment. BTW I'm really too old to be listening to R1.

I think Zane is realistically too 'cutting edge' for breakfast, as much as I like what he plays.

Annie Mac or someone like Fearn Cotton could work - both personable and love new music. The rest of their DJs come across as rather bland and blur into one another, so I couldn't name a viable alternative.

fern cotton is as awful as jo whiley was

sucking up to artists/bands annoys me

at least chris moyles has the guts to say live on air when he doesnt like a song or a guest... and will adjust the playlist during the show to play songs he prefers.

in the end they're all there to fill in the gaps between songs, certain times of the day will have different playlists and DJ's have to play a certain amount of tracks and tick certain songs off a list during their show.... if only my car had spotify!

While that might be technically accurate, a good radio DJ should be the reason for the listener to tune in really - and breakfast shows traditionally have quite a high chat content.

Terry Wogan is the perfect example of what I mean. There's no reason someone shouldn't be just as listenable on R1 - it just needs the right personality.

I've just had the slightly chilling realization that George Lamb is probably going to end up with the job. Not that I hate him as much as most 6music listeners do.

Zane Lowe on Radio 1 this morning was class, I heard a brilliant tune this morning, Fu-Schnickens Ring The Alarm

Much better than Chris bloody Moyles

I'd actually like DJs to play music that isn't just what's in the charts. From occasional snippets of Moyles he seems to not at all like a lot of what he plays and that shows with all the other crap on his show.

Zane is a bit much sometimes but at least he seems to care about his output on the radio and is given some freedom to play more than just the playlist. I remember Lauren Laverne had a similar deal when she did the XFM breakfast show and that was the last time that particular program was any good.

So maybe he doesn't play ideal morning music and can grate but there's some genuine passion (and not just for the payday unlike Moyles). I also liked the Fu-Schnickens today... real blast from the past.

Finally...

He must be murder at breakfast, "COMING AT YOU RIGHT NOW, FAST AND HARD JUST THE WAY YOU LIKE IT, IT'S THE TOAST!!"

One of the best things I've seen written on the forum for a while

Adjust the playlist, fill between songs, certain amount of tracks....

He only bloody well plays about 5 songs all show and fills the rest talking about himself. He's as bad, if not worse than Wiley when it comes to sucking up to guests too - just does it in a different manner, which usually consists of trying to make himself look witty into the bargain.

Oooh, wot a surprise I cannot see any posts!

I have been loving Zane Lowe in the morning, much better than the bitching and moaning of Moyles. Oh and Zane actually plays songs!

Is there a Morning Radio Show like Zane Lowe in the mornings?

About 8.37 this morning, between Arcade Fire and Pyano, he played an absolute tune - anyone know what it was?

I had a massive rave up in my little Clio 😀
