I am not sure if we have reached peak consumerism just yet. But I often wonder what happens to all the stuff that gets replaced before it useful life is over. I always have a feeling that there are thousands of top end Specialized languishing in the back of rich people garages that could be put to better use ( no idea why it's Specialized )

Anyway I have been taking advantage of people replacing their TV's ( Much to my 15 year old sons disgust ) and picked up some cracking T.V's

£40 Panasonic

[img] [/img]

£150 Amazing Pioneer Kuro

[img] [/img]

Now they do use approx 10 x the power of new LCD's of coarse but it would take a lot of use to offset these price differences.

Just make sure they have HDMI ports add a Firestick and they are very useful bits of kit.

SO.....What second hand bargains are picking up ? I am sure that STW is not so big that we would move the market, so no need to be shy 🙂

Point well missed (to a degree). 😛

A lot of the furniture in my house. We prefer the term antique.

The trick is to buy stuff a few years after, CD players used to cost a grand.

Early adopters of new tech pay a massive premium, good luck to them.

You might have been mugged pal, I was at a car boot sale the other weekend and a guy was selling a Sony trinitron TV, he literally couldn't give it away.

A fiver for a Betamax is not an informed investment.

Pretty much everything in our house.

Dining room has G-plan table, chairs and sideboard.

Living room has an armchair from next, fireplace is antique, dresser is 'upcycled' MFI, coffee tables were from an office clearance, as was the £200 officr chair in the study (and another in the hobby room, where the workbenches are also from a clearance). TV is a plasma pioneer we got fot free, it'll never use more electricity than it cost to make a new one!

Everything in the spare rooms appart from bedding.

All bar 1 of my bikes, all the cars, the boat.

So yup, lots of s/h, and a lot of that was off freecycle too!

There is a massive ( and probably quite natural ) pressure to have the latest and greatest bits of kit, but it does puts pressure on the family budget. How much easier would it be for parents of new babies if it was the done thing to get all their paraphernalia second hand for example.

Don't get me wrong I am not averse to getting the odd new shiny thing. but some things seem to lend themselves better than others to being second hand buys.

Oh I think more than 10% 🙂

There is always a reason for the old 911's to become very expensive this time it will because they are naturally aspirated.

Pay the Grand and get the IMS swapped out

CD players used to cost a grand.
Some still do, you want a quality, CD-only player, whereas a DVD or BluRay that'll play CD's will cost you about a hundred or so for a good one.
Ok, how about £11,000 for a stand-alone high-end CD-only player - http://www.whathifi.com/meridian/808v6-signature-reference-cd-player/review

Laptop - 5th Gen i5 (I think the ones with the black stickers, 8GB of RAM and a 256SSD - free. Someone bought it, dropped it a week later and bought another one. It sat around looking sorry for itself for a few weeks before I adopted it. its got 2 bolts straight through the lid holding it on. It's a standard biz spec so 720 screen and only onboard graphics but it's fast enough for browsing and office stuff.

TV in our bedroom came with the house, 10 year old Sony flat screen, great sound, it's about twice as wide as modern ones but I think they used the dept for speakers. Tops out at 720, but as that as high as NowTV goes it's perfect. It looks like it was a nigh spec one back in the day. We've also got a DVD player and VHS that came with it. Unused.

We do similar, I bought a Panasonic 3d TV about 5 years ago, the kit including the goggles and 3d player, came to £900
I just picked up the same TV from my local Facebook classifieds with 2 sets of goggles for a £100. Great TV.

Panasonic 50" plasma - immaculate and £120. Seemed like a good deal until I bought a 46" one for £45 when.

I actually bought the same model new in 42" size about 8 years ago for £800+. We do seem to be collecting Panasonic Viera's !

Oh, and a Henry hoover bought for £15 as not working. £3 switch off ebay and 20mmins to fit and all is well.

My first mountain bike was new, as was the first time I went to a 29er. I also bought a new Anthem (albeit in the EoY sales), and I had a new road bike when i got back into it. The most I spent on any bike, new or old was £850

Apart from them, all my others have been frame only, with bits transplanted and the vast majority (7 o/of 9 if my finger counting is right) were second hand.

Given it's my main hobby and has been for 25 years, I'm almost ashamed at how little I've spent on it compared to the claims of "£1000 entry level" and "decent for £2500" sorts of numbers some of my clubmates bandy about.

Delonghi EC330 for £10 from a guy at work. Had sat unused in his kitchen for 18 months before he decided he didn't really like coffee anyway and it was taking up a plug socket...

15k off an XC60? I think I'd go for an RS4 myself.

In fact, i can feel the start of a journey of adventure and discovery coming on at the thought of it....

Hiking boots.

A place near us gets all the returns from one of the big outdoor companies.
Most returned after being worn once, some are refurbed:
Hanwags - £50 - £100, reduced from £180 - £250 depending on model.
Brasher Superlight - £40.
Asolo winter boots - £50 etc.

Saved a fortune.

I bought a jacket from Austin Reed for about £200, for the JC look, when a suit was too formal for work but needed something in between.

The Mrs picked up a better Austin Reed jacket for £5 from the charity shop. I wear it more than the other.

My mate was selling a 2 month old 55 inch flat screen the other day for £20. Only trouble was the sound was stuck on MAX.

Well I couldn't turn it down.

Wife has reminded me she has discovered a reliable source of genuine 'posh' handbags in a nearby charity shop.

Must be some local fashionista with a conscience and a short attention span.
I hope she takes up cycling.

Freecycle/Freegle

Most of our furniture if not all is recycled via the landfill-phobic and/or the YWCA shop

ie a gigantic Tetrad grande Chesterfield that was mostly unused but a bit stinky-damp-stored.

We split it in half (designed this way), stood on end, ran a fan heater and kept the windows open for about three or four days. Used some anti-mould/enzyme spray (if I remember correctly) just to be sure. Estimated cost was less than 100 quid in energy/cleaning product. We later discovered the sofa cost about £2500 new, and ours was now like new! Quality product. Heirloom stuff.

10 years later it's just had new cushion covers (made by local sewing genius) and the buffalo-hide (wt??) is going strong and looks set to out-last us both.

Last week picked up another Freegle chesterfield (two seater) and it cost us just £45*. We gave away two armchairs to make space.

*Yes, should have been 'free' but cost £45 quid to replace the car tyre. There were 6" nails on their driveway. A trap!

True confession. I love my secondhand bikes more than my new ones.

I get this too. Currently looking at a shabby/neglected retro Raleigh money-pit that I adopted. Spent 30 minutes removing grime/seeing shine and then began that inevitable attachment/white-knight syndrome 😉

On the flipside, I paid £1250 for a lovely Myryad Mi a few years ago. It really wasn't used much and[s] my wife[/s] we've rejigged the house a bit so recently removed it.
Looked at what they are going for on eBay 😯

Bit of a bummer...

Bought some 18 month old Pikes on here 18 months ago for a couple of hundred, gave them to lbs to drop the travel, lbs sent to fishers, fishers sent back new forks, having seen they were goosed (unbeknown to me, they felt fine) 😀
