We're a smallish management team of about 10, but we're also spread about the country. What we're after is a wall type space to write quick updates onto so that everyone can see. Emails often turn into a long conversation which becomes quite diverting and noisy amongst other proper work emails, so we need something smarter that can be used on phones too. So is yammer the one? What else is there?

And then is there anything else like Storify where we can take one particular subject or series of events to create an easy to read chronology rather than having to pick out the relevant bits on a feed?

Very early stages in looking at this so any ideas for me to look into would be greatly appreciated.

We use Yammer at work, it gets used mainly for sports and social chat really but a lot of the tech support and service guys use it to ask questions if they don't know specifically who to direct the question to when out in the field. We never seem to have any problems with it.

Maybe create a private facebook group? Central communication area, post pics etc, images of whiteboard sessions, sketches of concepts etc?

Podio? I'm led to believe that it's like FB but for business

Houns is indeed a Yammer.

Podio looks a bit overkill. I don't think we need all the project management and stuff, we just need an electronic pinboard for ideas and quick Twitter style updates.

Thanks for the ideas so far...

What could you possibly need to ask of your colleagues that can't be answered on STW?

Yammer works quite well for us. We're quite a big organisation and I'd say about a third of our staff have signed up to Yammer. I guess the policy that it's considered business use so people can spend all day on it helped. 😉

The engineers in the business use it most I think which is quite interesting. they do a lot of collaborative stuff on there. My only gripe with Yammer, is that all you need is a corporate email address to join. Plenty of our partners have corporate emails addresses so they could see what is being discussed there. Also, if someone leaves the company, they don't leave Yammer automatically so they can post pictures of their arse.

That can also be done on STW, if I remember Chipps'/Mark's mature riposte to Cressers correctly...
