Trump threatens 'fury' against N Korea
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-40869319
Most of the time I shrug this sort of shit off, but this could actually be it - ICBMs at dawn or a war with a their 1.1 military personnel who have been taught their whole lives we just want to kill and enslave them.
Two idiots who don't know how to back down / negotiate - this'll be interesting.
war with a their 1.1 military personnel
Well that shouldn't be too difficult.
US always seem to look for an excuse to throw their weight around, whats the point of having a huge army if you are not going to use it! If it isn't North Korea it'll be Iran.
If you're going to go to war with a country that has ICBMs and nukes best do it before they've got them joined up rather than after.
Hard to see how Korea isn't going to get flattened sometime soon.
It'll be fine. China will get this shit sorted.
*starts digging bunker*
the yanks and the banks love a war.
If you're going to go to war with a country that has ICBMs and nukes best do it before they've got them joined up rather than after.Hard to see how Korea isn't going to get flattened sometime soon.
I doubt they need an ICBM to cause a nuclear catastrophe they have 70 or so submarines 20 or so with 9000 mile range. could easily carry a nuclear device to Tokyo or LA
In genuinely concerned Trump is currently spouting those weird phrases you read in Tom Clancy books right now trying to justify a war to get him a second term (worked for Bush Jr.)
I can see it now as a tweet "clear and present danger, we should intervene with extreme prejudice - Hunt for red October. Sad".
I doubt they need an ICBM to cause a nuclear catastrophe they have 70 or so submarines 20 or so with 9000 mile range. could easily carry a nuclear device to Tokyo or LA
Not without being spotted. They can't launch it yet, so a giant water fountain is the best they could manage anyway.
Americans have been extensively testing their new missile defence capabilities and deploying them to S Korea. The consequences of nuclear strikes to S Korea or Japan will be pretty catastrophic to the global economy, plus leaving the Chinese to deal with millions of starving N Koreans. Even Trump isn't that stupid......
Don't you reckon the US could flatten North Korea with conventional stuff anyway, if so desired? Without too much collateral damage (?)
It would be like me chucking a hammer at Ton! (me being NK & Ton being the USA)
Even Trump isn't that stupid......
Hmmm...not so sure about that.
US invading North Korea would be for the Chinese the same as it would be for the Yanks if China invaded Mexico. They might not want to fight to protect them but they sure don't want US forces on their borders.
Even Trump isn't that stupid......
Say that again, but out loud this time.
Terrified now?
Don't you reckon the US could flatten North Korea with conventional stuff anyway, if so desired?
Yes, but... not before n.korea flattens s.korea with artillery.
US intelligence agencies now believe, it was reported on Tuesday, the Pyongyang regime has succeeded in building a nuclear weapon small enough to put on an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) – a conclusion supported by a Japanese government study. The US assessment also estimated the North Korean nuclear arsenal has now reached as much as 60 warheads, substantially more than earlier assessments.
Ah well time to buy all those bikes and things I want. No need to save for a pension.
NK would inflict terrible losses on the SK and US ground forces in a conventional conflict with rocket and normal artillery before SK and US Air superiority asserted itself. USAF early efforts I suspect would be carving out corridors to nuclear sites to eliminate them.
THAAD is untested in conflict and I suspect that the advertised performance isn't as good as wartime.
The NK also reportedly have large stocks of nerve agents and other chemical weapons.
It would be a bloody, terrible mess.
NK also has circa 100K suicide commandoes and tunnels deep into SK.
We'll all be dust by the 23rd Sept 17 anywhoo.
Hard to see how Korea isn't going to get flattened sometime soon.
Again.
While I don't condone the NK regeime (or the US one for that matter) if you don't understand the history you wouldn't understand why they have such a strong anti-US rhetoric. During the Korean War the US killed 20% of the population / 3million people in 3years and pretty much levelled anything bigger than a haystack...
Really not sure what the big deal is ... 🙄
They can start WW 5 .... thoussssandsss if they wish ...
It's about time for one of those invasions to set about a regime change that we're so good at.
I'm just not sure who we'd replace Trump with.
Trump isn't stupid, it crazy but he isn't stupid - assuming he wants a second term (he doesn't seem keen on the job so far) he knows that the democrats are going to wheel out the best looking, whitest, most well spoken candidate they can find without so much as a blemish on his record in 2020 and destroy him - one of the best ways to win a second term in the US is to start or end a war.
You've seen those nature programmes on Silverback Gorilla's haven't you? This is what's going on. Its all about China and US and China expanding power in Asia. The US has lots of interests in Asia, China is building its own empire and threatening US interests and using N.Korea to destabilise the region in order to grab power. But China relies on the US for its economy so all a bit of a game. Its all posturing and chest beating. My worry is Kim Jon Un. He could just go it alone and start throwing some nukes about. But he was brought up and educated outside of N.Korea so i'm hoping he's actually not as mad as we all think and fear he is and acting up to retain power in N.Korea. He only rules while the military leaders allow him to rule.
A conventional war with N.Korea would be bloody, entrenched, long and horrendous. I'm not sure the US has the stomach for it.
But getting ICMB's is one thing. Having a viable arsenal is another. We saw not too long ago with the UK Trident failed test that these things are not 100% reliable. That is why we have such a large stockpile of the things - chuck alot of them in the air knowing some will fail to reach their targets to be sure that enough will get though. They've only just got their first ICBM so is still decades away from having a viable arsenal....but having said that only one needs to get through.
Oh for the good old days of the Cold War where we knew our enemy, could predict their actions and it was all a propaganda exercise.
I suggest they start the war now rather than all these silly talks.
What's the nukes for if they don't use it? Nuke something ... 🙄
EU should also join in the nuke war, by sticking their noses into others affairs when they are not called for, to get nuke themselves ... 😆
I think they should escalate to all out nuke war.
Make half the world uninhabitable so the animals and nature can take it back.
Oooh Mr Trump can we join in?
After all we have A Special Relationship where we do whatever we are told.

Join the party, press the nuke button, star a war not peace. 😈
Peace and silence will prevail when half the mankind no longer walk this world.
But make sure all continents are nuked to some extend ... 😈
I agee, out of the two of us you can be the half that no longer walks this world. On you go.Peace and silence will prevail when half the mankind no longer walk this world.
Don't you reckon the US could flatten North Korea with conventional stuff anyway, if so desired?
It would be ****ing horrific, long drawn out and with massive casualties
Sorry P-Jay but Trump is stupid; he does not take intelligence briefings, he has minimal attention span, has very limited understanding of foreign affairs - based on the majority of 'informed' comments coming out of the US.
His attitude appears to be....go on, hit me, see what happens; slightly high risk.
Kim is calculating and continuing the family strategy - from grandfather and father - of attempting to force the US to negotiate on NK's terms.
If it all goes tits up the US is the only military winner - eventually; but at what cost? SK destroyed, Japan likewise ( paying the price for being, and continuing to be, substantially un/disarmed in the aftermath of WW2)
China will be the overall winners - sort of predicted by one of the mediaeval soothsayers.
Global economy - will be trucked if this goes badly; buy gold and dig a hole in the forest to bury it in (or.....in which to bury it?)
One of my sons now lives in upstate NY so I have more than a passing interest in this.
Two idiots who don't know how to back down / negotiate - this'll be interesting
Sounds like a few on here.
Apart from the last bit.

You don't get to choose but if you want to survive you might need to hide deep in the bunker. When you come out from the bunker mutants and zombies will await you. 😈
In the meantime, I shall be dust with no worry like most people. Although you might survive you will need to fight the mutant and zombie to stay alive with constant worry. How long can you last? 😆
Peace and silence will prevail when half the mankind no longer walk this world.
Hate to break it to you chewkw but we had half the current world population less than fifty years ago and it wasn't exactly peace and light back then either.

It looks like the matter is much more urgent now to nuke the world.
The earth needs regeneration so all continents Must burn. 😈
I'm on a 3 month sabbatical from work at the moment & when I left I told them it's my pre WWIII holiday.I was only half joking when I said it but if anything I think we're getting even more likely to have some kind of military conflict involving the US & North Korea in the next couple of years.
It's up to China to step in & wind in the Koreans, not sure who could influence Trump's administration,Farage? Putin? 😯

I think the ultimate goal is for western power to move out of Asia.
Therefore, all talks are short term.
The earth needs regeneration so all continents Must burn.
I'm struggling to see how a global nuclear winter would be "regeneration" but okay, Planet of the Apes it is.

Actually, there is nothing to regenerate other than making the place out of bound for mankind i.e. uninhabitable for thousands of years to come. 😛
Ok Chewkie, It's past ya bedtime! 😉
You are, as ever, a very weird chap chewkw.

Mankind do not deserve sympathy if they cannot control themselves.
Therefore, nuke wars are merely the natural cycle of things to come.
edit: Oh ya when it comes to nuke wars I don't take side coz all of them are the same.
Ah, lefties predicting imminent nuclear war because they're not happy with the choice of US president.
It's just all so very 1980's isn't it?
and 1970's
and 1960's
and 1950''s
I suppose if they just keep predicting it, one day it might come true, eh? 🙄
So presumably you think Trump is all bluster when he talks of "fire and fury" and really he is as impotent as that leftie libtard Obama?
Mankind do not deserve sympathy if they cannot control themselves.
There's nothing unique about human behaviour in regards to over extraction of resources and population growth, or indeed being truly horrible to each other (e.g. Bears eating Bear cubs or killing Bears to defend resources). It's just what happens when the various checks on growth are absent.
Singling out humanity is more down to the human ego and it's need for a perceived separate identity/meaning leading us to believe we are distinct from the natural world. Which in my view is false as the behaviour our species exhibits is natural by definition.
What the planet needs is a good old fashioned dose of predation on humans!
Will 'North Korea has a miniaturised nuclear warhead capability' be this decade's 'Saddam has WMDs'?
Smells fishy to me. Only time will tell. Scary times ahead.
Judging by some comments it seems that we are in danger of becoming like the worst American stereotypes? Ironic. It's all just a bit black-tard/white-ard/left-tard/right-tard for my tiny brain.
Ah, lefties predicting imminent nuclear war because they're not happy with the choice of US president.
Almost the perfect antidote to those on the 'Right' always agitating for imminent war because they're happy with the choice of President. Weird that.
Talking of which - it seems we have a Tr*mp supporter in our midst who is either a commited satire-troll method-acting, or an actual Tr*mp supporter agitating for nuclear annihilation. Internet overdose?
Not to abandon the forecast theme, I predict, for this Friday coming:
High probability of rain, fish and chips, and many people being dicks to one another.
“North Korea best not make any more threats to the United States,” Trump told journalists at his club in Bedminster, New Jersey. “They will be met with fire and fury like the world has never seen.” He then expanded the line to “fire, fury and frankly, power the likes of which this world has never seen before”
Anyone else think he's got a bit carried away with last night's tv?
Singling out humanity is more down to the human ego and it's need for a perceived separate identity
That'd be our uniquely evolved capacity for conceptual and abstract thought, giving rise to game-changers such as self-awareness, self-assessment, empathy, high capacity for complex forward-planning, etc etc. We are not bears. If you catch your neighbour dashing his baby's brains out before eating them, then you are more likely to be witnessing serious mental-illness and or/extreme famine. Sorry I don't buy this 'just reverting to 'nature' explanation for violence and murder.
Two idiots who don't know how to back down / negotiate - this'll be interesting.
They should come here for advice.
This could all be resolved if Trump had just listened to what the NK government said about destroying the US and just laughed instead of giving such a idiot reply.
Regarding WWW3, if NK do launch a pre-emptive strike against any US territory I can assure you not even the Chinese would stop the US doing anything, there's two reasons, one is the financial link between the two countries (its a different world to that of the Korean war) and the second is they are more scared of losing face in not being able to militarily take on the US to even try at present.
I would be more concerned about not what Korea does but who it sells this technology to, I would imagine that Iran getting hold of some half decent ICBM technology would make one or two nations in the middle east a little trigger happy.
My 2 cents.
As the US is the only country to use nuclear weapons on an enemy, when the President refers to using "unprecedented" power, it is not something to be applauded, it is not something to be taken lightly, and it is, quite literally, playing with fire. Only an idiot, or an extreme nihilist, would support such words.
Like most things Trump says it's all bluster and bombast. The US can't really do anything other than place sanctions, or talk. War isn't an option
Are chewwie and ninfan the same person?
So - should I order a new Kia?
I don't want to buy a new car then there be no [s]country[/s] company left for back up and spares.
Sorry I don't buy this 'just reverting to 'nature' explanation for violence and murder.
Never said it was to be fair!
The language Trump uses is pretty bizarre, it's the kind of phrasing you expect to come from Kim Jong-un not the other way around. It's all a bit pathetic though, like two drunk idiots arguing in a bar.
Realistically though Trump is pretty impotent in this, my bet is WW3 still being in the 2040's and it will be robots vs humans :p
The language Trump uses is pretty bizarre, it's the kind of phrasing you expect to come from Kim Jong-un not the other way around
With that look on his face "I'm so ****ing impressive".
Never a song so fitting
I came on here to say the same as batfink, I think he was all pumped up after watching the latest GoT ep.
Tune in to next weeks episode of "Donalds Classic Blunders" when the Donald goes in against a Sicilian when Death is on the line.
Anyone been to Guam? I have and I wouldn't fight to go back. If you must go to war over a Pacific island at least choose a nice one.
I came on here to say the same as batfink, I think he was all pumped up after watching the latest GoT ep.
Maybe he thinks he's got those dragons as backup
Ah, the art of the deal. Bluster yourself into a corner by claiming that fire and brimstone will rain down on your opponent for even the mildest provocation, then choose between a regional apocalypse or complete humiliation when that provocation inevitably comes.
What a total buffoon, exceeding our expectations at every turn.
Even the Russians must be thinking it's about time to hand over the thumbdrive or slip something in his Diet Coke.
In GoT terms, he's a fat Joffrey.
In GoT terms, he's a fat Joffrey.
He has vehemently denied being a littlefinger.
Daenerys to be chief of homeland security by Monday.....
The US can't really do anything other than place sanctions, or talk. War isn't an option
You mean like how the us cooperated with other members of the UNSC to place sanctions on NK? Indeed, rather than just strengthening existing sanctions, they chose to relaxing areas of sanctions that were causing adverse humanitarian impacts, and introducing new ones in different areas.
So, the 'war-monger' Trump, instead of taking military action, took the 'co-operate with other nations to seek a peaceful outcome' solution, whilst warning of decisive military action if attacked?
OMG, Shock, horror, mad nutter in charge at the White House, everyone run around screaming whilst dad unscrews the doors and builds a lean-to in the living room
I say let him go for it, but he has to be the one to deliver the 'fire and fury'. No assistance from anyone, save for wheeling a B2 Spirit out of a hangar and saying 'Off you pop then'.
Should neutralise both threats pretty quickly
whilst warning of decisive military action if attacked?
If threatened, actually, but carry on.
Here it is in all its barely coherent majesty.
"North Korea best not make any more threats to the United States. They will be met with fire and fury like the world has never seen... he has been very threatening beyond a normal state. They will be met with fire, fury and frankly power the likes of which this world has never seen before,"
whilst warning of decisive military action if [s]attacked[/s] they make any more threats?
FIFY
Chinese Govt rep on Radio 4 this morning insisting they have a bi-lateral agreement with NK (similar to Nato Article 5) that would mean any attack on NK would force them to intervene. Fortunately, China's economy / political elite is too dependent on US$ for them to be taken too seriously. Generals Kelly and McMaster will hopefully provide some reality in the White House make sure the short-fingered one can't reach for the red-button
I say let him go for it, but he has to be the one to deliver the 'fire and fury'. No assistance from anyone

Get Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un in the same room together with the wee hairdresser guy from the One Show.
He could sort out their appalling haircuts and after that, i'm sure everything would be fine.
NK Know that using Nukes would be a regime changing event for them, there is no way they will do it. It would be suicide.
The US won't use them first. Not again.
The nukes are mainly a tool to allow the NK to extort aid and foreign assistance from the rest of the world and to add to the governments personal prestige within the country. The strategy is to use them to get a top seat at the table instead of looking like some crazy rogue nation.
There isn't going to be a nuclear war, calm down everyone.
You're in a tricky spot to defend there ninfan.
Trump was quite clear that "threats to the United States" would "be met with fire, fury and frankly power the likes of which this world has never seen before".
Trump lambasted Obama for not taking action in Syria after they crossed his "red line".
Now facing North Korea, who have repeatedly crossed previous lines with their continued missile testing, Trump has drawn his own mighty bombastic red line.
If they cross it then he will either need to take a huge hit to his pride (something I don't think he'll want to do) or he'll need to make good on it and go to war.
Trump should build a wall around NK and make them pay for it.
Bit of a weird one the whole NK situation.
Personally I don't think you can blame any country for wanting a nuclear deterrent whilst other countries have one.
The question is, are they nutty enough to use one as something other than a deterrent? If the answer to that is deemed to be yes then i've also no objection to flattening NK with conventional weapons preemptively.
The the biggest problem I see (and probably why NK hasn't been flattened already) is that other countries will end up in the crossfire.

trump doesnt care
he lies, then pretends he never said that at all, hes been doing it constantly since, forever it seems
for everything he does theres a tweet of him criticising Obama or other politicians for doing exactly that
his presidency is such a continual shitshow no one ever stops to ponder it
Hes just making a fool of himself and backing kim jong un into a corner, which seems utterly foolish
fire, fury and frankly power the likes of which this world has never seen before"
is perfect material for NKs domestic propaganda machine
There seem to be lots in this thread that age taking a slightly amused, watching from the sidelines, not our problem view. May I remind you, NATO treaty, Article 5
It commits each member state to consider an armed attack against one member state, in Europe or North America, to be an armed attack against them all.
We could get drawn into any conflict.
