I know it's really not a safety risk and the speedo will read incorrectly, but has anyone bought and had fitted the wrong size from one of the online retailers?

The Passat usually has 215/55 but I am looking for winter tyres and 205/55 are much cheaper. Kwik Fit told me they couldn't fit any other size than the original.

They'll be fine.

I have Larger than standard tyres on my 4x4 ... My vote goes to them being awkward!

I know they will be fine. Has anyone had any trouble having them fitted via the online people?

Try Black Circle Tyres (link). I paid about £110 (fitted) for a pair of Yokohama tyres for my Passat. Buy online, choose a garage, choose a date/time. Great idea.

How do you get tires fitted online, or am I missing something?

I used one of the online ones (my tyres I think) for my winter tyres. They happily put 185/65R15 on in place of 195/60R15, although they did ask if I knew the size was different.

Which I did and they were cheaper.

You should have no problem getting those fitted.

Insurance, check what it says about tyres. They'll use any excuse if, and i hope you don't, you have a prang.

Is this just so your speedo shows more than 100mph on an autobahn?

Shouldn't affect the speedo as they not smaller/bigger in circumference, its just the width across the tread that's narrower by 10 mm, the profile is the same at 55

Why not wait till you get to Germany? Probably be cheaper.

the profile figure is a % of the width, isn't it?

yup,

215*0.55=115.8mm

205*0.55=112.5mm

I bought 185 winter tyres for my mums Nissan and it has 195 summer tyres on the same wheels. Fitted no problem. I drove the car this winter and they perform well, no problem whatsoever. Same steel wheels had 205 rear tyres before the new summer ones. You won't be braking speed records on winter tyres anyway. It seems the only issue would be the insurance company.

Yeah but if it's snowing when we get there we will be in die scheisse won't we? Plus it could be the middle of the night or something.

Back on the subject of tyres, my Father in Law says he usually goes for narrower tyres through choice, so they cut through the snow better.

He dont need ur calculater Hora as he asking about fitting a different width not profile.

Again if fitting tyres different to those specified by the car manufacturer you need to speak to your insurance company, even if they are the same size and are only winter tyres compared to summer.

In the company fleet we once had a car that specified that only 2 specific tyres could be fitted and no the car wasnt something esoteric.
The fleet company wernt so happy as the tyres were 2 twice the price and wore out quickly as they were soft.
