We will be in touch
Me and the little lady are looking at booking our (late) summer hols, current idea is to go to a couple of Greek islands 'cos we've never been and didn't get there on out European tour.
However, obviously, the economy is in the toilet, so will their rampant inflation mean that a moussaka and retsina meal for two will cost about a thousand pounds come September?
Would you book now?
I think I'd wait till they are back on the drachma, I predict some much cheaper Greek holidays being available this time next year.
TJ will be along soon to tell you the Euro will be fine but I don't think anyone really believes Greece can stay in it.
No problems holidaying in Greece, cant see the inflation going that bad there but you never know.
Could go the other way and be really cheap.
greece, especially the islands can be lovely, id just book it anyway
I think I'd be a bit more worried about the destination hotel being there. 😯
Just book it on your credit card.
I went island hopping there back in 1990.
And I too can't wait for them to leave the Euro...
Further to my rather flippant post I'd not worry about going on Holiday there. I've worked in Athens since the protests have been going on and it's been fine. Not that I'd recommend Athens.
Yes going to Greece in 6weeks and looking forward to it. What happens in Athens is a long way from the Islands and they know they have to protect their tourists from any consequences.
There is probably someone in Greece on a forum saying "would you go to London this summer?" followed by loads of negative Olympic comments.
It appears to be quite expensive at the minute mind.
Whats not to like, unlikely you'll get caught up in anything out of the ordinary. Unless you mean tipping olive oil down you're new flowery shirt and espadrilles that is.
Interesting first post there Grigoris. What type of bike do you ride 😀
Anyway I'd got to Greece in a heartbeat, the Greeks are all lovely.
I find it difficult to square the idea of Greeks as tax dodging euro-villains with what I've experinced when I've been on holiday.
Crete is one of my favourite place to go on holiday
yes to the countryside/islands etc - no to the cities, where you could get caught up in general strikes / riots etc.
where you could get caught up in general strikes / riots etc.
You've not lived until you've gone face to face with the Euro Cops... Put the British Bobbies to shame.
No, but not because of the riots.
We went to Rhodes last year. Everything was pretty pricey and the food was all very samey. And much of the the place was pretty ropey.
We'd been to Dubrovnik a while before and to be honest, we couldn't understand it. Yugoslavia had years of dictatorship followed by a recent civil war, and Croatia was all in pretty decent nick, Dubrovnik itself was pristine despite being shot to bits quite recently. What's Greece's excuse for foot wide wobbly pavements, flakey paintwork and half built everything?
What's Greece's excuse for foot wide wobbly pavements, flakey paintwork and half built everything?
Half built everything is a tax dodge, I think. As soon as a building is finished tax has to be paid, incomplete equals no tax. I assume you are talking about buildings that look like they need another floor or need a roof with all the steel work poking out.
Which Part of Rhodes did you go to? There was a few Empty bars and one or two half built buildings in Faliraki but thats about it. Pavements are all block paved with one or two holes here and there. But not as bad as anything i have seen in England.
I didn't find it massively expensive and i have been going to Rhodes for the past 8 years. Last year Me and the girlfriend didn't have a huge budget, about 1200 Euros between us for two weeks so 85 Euros a day between us both. We were self catering and had breakfast out most days, bought a sandwich or made one for lunch and had a meal out every night and various restaurants and drinks every night.
We also smoked 20 a day each and managed to buy a bag for her, few T shirts and Jeans and other bits and baps in Rhodes and took back 400 ciggies and some baccie.
Visited the usual places of Lindos, Anthony Quinn Bay, the water park, Prasonissi beach to wind surf, hired a car for a few weeks.
Greece needs tourism as that is where it gets most of its income from, prices are more expensive compared to 2008, but they are still cheap in comparison to the UK.
Either way, regardless of the current Economic situation in Greece, you will still get the wonderful Greek Hospitality.
I can't wait to go back next September, we'd of been going this year, but have just moved house, so finances are a bit tight at the moment.
I have a mate who has spent the last 18 months to-ing and fro-ing to Greece and back, renovating a little plot of land with a static home on it..
he thinks it's absolutely idyllic at the moment.. As per, the hospitality is second to none.. the bars are pretty much free of chavs and there's a lovely 'war spirit'.. everyone coming together and helping each other out and remembering that there's much more to life than the capitalist ideology..
The whole dirty loo roll in a bin thing is enough to put me off.
It gets empty every day so its not too bad. And the Hospitality is defo something worth going for. Been taken out on a proper family night out with the locals, and the food is absolutely divine and the booze keeps flowing.
Didn't ever want to come home.
