Would like to buy a good quality compact wood axe to keep in my van to enable the chopping of campfire wood. Usually by the bags of fire wood from petrol stations etc and the pieces are usually a bit big until the fire gets going.

Needs to be compact - so was thinking around 30cm?? Don't know if there is a special term for a compact axe?

Can anybody recommend one?

You're splitting wood rather than chopping it - any old hand axe will be OK for that size job.

Yep just splitting - hand axe? Buy from b&q or specialist place?

I have a cheap B&Q one. It works.

Aye, looks good to me. The B&Q one with the steel handle and rubber handle is murder on my hands if I use it for any length of time though, takes off old callusses like you wouldn't believe. Well finished wood is way nicer if you're working without gloves.

I have a cracking wee Husqvana hatchet one, supposedly a Wetterlings copy / identical. Certainly is well sharpened and does the job of limbing and splitting wee stuff for the fire-box nicely
