We will be in touch
So I'm not a film buff, but it seemed a way to kill a couple of wet hours while we were on holiday. My expectations were very low, after the awful Tim Burton version.
I absolutely loved it. The time flew by. Just pulled me in, the story, the casting, the clever nods and links to the original version. Really well done. I'd happily go and watch it again, and I suspect I'd notice many more bits i missed the first time.
Not saying it will sweep the Oscars, but just a really nice film to watch.
Now flame me!
We went the other day - I wasn't expecting much either as I don't really like musical type films.
Actually really enjoyed it - more like the Gene Wilder one I remember as a kid.
Saw it last Friday, thought it was amazing. Really fits well with the original, the amount of references to the earlier film is great and hugh grant as an oompa loompa is inspired (I want his luggage though - human sized)
Yeh I watched with my kid and we both absolutely loved it.
My favourite film of the year
I like the peep show connection. I counted 3 peep show actors: Sophie, Johnson and Dobby's cool boyfriend
Music is great too: Neil hannon did the soundtrack
Massive ghosts/horrible histories links too
to solve a fight between my wife and I : would a 4 year old enjoy it? Said 4 year old is (we both agree) unlikley to be scared by any of it, but would it all just sail above his head or is there enough silliness to keep him engaged?
Yeh we all really liked Wonka.
Also went to see The Boy and the Heron the other day, studio gibley Japanese animation, English subtitles. We were all very confused, and I struggled not to snore (sorry lady next to me who jumped at a brief snort that escaped), though it was very warm ans the film quite soporific 🤣
Saw it yesterday. Spent the first 10-15 minutes thinking that it was rubbish before falling in love with it.
And yes, Hugh Grant was fantastic.
Saw it yesterday too. Clearly going against the flow here but I didn’t really get it to be honest. Plot seemed really random and just felt like the prelude to the classic wonka story could have been done more justice as a plot.
why was it set in a far-off land (french references and street names i think). The setting of Charlie and the chocolate factory always seemed very british to me as a kid. I could’ve turned a blind eye to that until the end when he made his factory in some run-down castle in the same foreign land…just a bit random although maybe i was missing something obvious or just imagined it!! 😆
The best Wonka film is the Honest Trailer with Michael Bolton. Has me in stitches every time I watch it. Looking forward to watching Wonka with the kids when it comes to streaming

I found Mrs Scrubbit's boyfriend, Mr Bleacher, the most entertaining character/actor.
Unfortunately every time I saw Hugh Grant images of Divine Brown going down on an Oompa Loompa in a parked car entered my head 😕
Enjoyable with excellent casting but probably not very memorable imo.
my wife & kids went today and they loved it
my wife's quite the critic so that's high praise
Saw it yesterday with the 10 and 13 year old. Occasionally story a bit slow for the younger one who loves fast paced films. I really enjoyed it and thought Hugh Grant was a highlight as an Oompa Loompa. A nice way to spend a dreich afternoon
would a 4 year old enjoy it?
Our 4 year old LOVED it, and hasn't stopped singing songs from it since.
As did and have I. Great film
I’m going to have to go against the grain here. To quote my wife “without the Oompa Loompa it would have been utter shit”. The three of us went to see it, with fairly high expectations, but thought it lacked any of the magic of either the Jonny Depp film or the Paddingtons. Like they’d had a load of ideas but couldn’t decide which ones to go with so went with all of them without really doing any development. I accept that we’re seemingly in a small minority.
Saw it today and we all enjoyed it. Even my 3 and a half year old who is normally a fidget and noisy when bored was happy through out.
Well this is a thread I'm never showing my wife! Time for a quiet reversal of opinion 😂

Oh dear, that’s an image I’m going to struggle to get out of my mind! Never a bottle of Mind Bleach™ © ® handy when you need it! 🤢
Saw it over Christmas - absolutely loved it and that was even after my initial thought of "oh - it's a musical, damn".
Great characters and Hugh Grant is inspired. I couldn't care less that it doesn't dovetail exactly with the original - it is bloody brilliant on it's own.
Really good. A few of the 'little ones' were getting a bit scared at the 'chocolate tank' scene, but they were fine. I think their mums and dads were about to be bankrupted by 'chocolate' requests.
Fabulous film and on a par, if not better, than the original. Funny too.
I found it dull, predictable and lacking any depth whatsoever. It was perfectly watchable and no doubt suits a young audience, but I think they ought to have done better.

Each to their own. I was 51 at the time I watched and thought it fabulous. 🤷♂️
Didn’t get it. Just found it all a bit dull although Hugh Grant was, indeed, brilliant. 6 year old seemed to like it but he was more blown away by the whole cinema experience (his first) than the film.
