Need to drill some holes into walls to support a worktop.
There’s some wiring nearby, but not all of the wiring in the house is routed according to current best practice.
Do the sensor gadgets work? And how accurate are they? Y’know, before I kill myself.
Thanks in advance.
I have an old screwfix branded one, useless for finding studs but fairly reliable for finding pipes, screws & wires - better if in use carrying a current at the time.
Probably accurate to a couple of inches sometimes, but the size of the device hampers anything better.
Bosch do a fairly good one. Track everything nearby as that gives you confidence it works and a bit of a map, then check the area you are drilling
I've got a Stanley one. Works ok. You get a few false readings but if you take readings in a few places you can get a reasonable picture of what's there
Double post
They do work, but are not that accurate, as in you can't reliably get close to a wire, you have to give it a wide berth.
If you get one with adjustable sensitivity, you can use that to fine-tune where something is. I use bits of masking tape on the wall to mark signals, it's a bit like playing Minehunt 😉
Definitely most accurate for live electrical, less accurate for metal pipework, not much better than guesswork for plastic pipes and studs.
got the Bosch one with a couple of sensitivity levels as above. Would recommend. have used cheap ones before and although they were ok they weren't nearly as reliable as the Bosch.Bosch do a fairly good one
which Bosch one ate you referring to? there are several version. top one is £600....
Got a Bosch GMS120 on recommendation from a friend who works with tools. While I don't have a large amount of experience, it seems to work well and is lightyears ahead of any of the cheapie ones I've used before.
It is pretty sensitive, worth taking note of the manual where it states that if it seems like it's finding electrical wires everywhere put your hand in the wall nearby to reduce static.
It's no longer on sale but the Bosch PMD 10 looks like a newer version of the same thingwhich Bosch one ate you referring to?
I bought a cheap one from wickes a few years ago It was flipping useless. Today I had to drill a couple of holes for a heavy set of cast iron coat hooks and remembered I had a Garrett carrot upstairs, it worked a treat. The only use it's seen since buying it along with my metal detector.
never heard of that walabot, but it looks impressive
