Just a quick one for the IT crowd....

Cheesed off with Kaspersky.

Won't auto update reliably and today's update seems to have log jammed the laptop (not for the first time).

If I can uninstall the POS and stop them auto renewing ...

Can I just use Windows defender and firewall apps without taking on an increased risk of malware etc etc?

Windows defender is fine for home use.

Cheers folks, currently trying to purge Kaspersky from the machine and get windows firewall to wake up. Defender seems to be running ok.

And done 😀

Now all I've got to do is get them to erase my payment method from the billing system - which may be interesting given previous experience.

If it's a typical home system, your router will be a decent firewall by default.

You don't particularly need to run another 'secondary' firewall on your pc.

Well, that's assuming no device on your network has been compromised. Like say, someone getting malware through means other than a port attack, or whilst on a different network, and then infecting other machines on the network via an open port...

Leave the Windows firewall on. Won't hurt, might help.

I was referring to running 3rd party software firewalls that get bundled /recommended with bloated AV packages.

Sorry, cross information.

If the government breaks encryption anyway (in the name of preventing terrorist atrocities) then it's all completely redundant.

As above, plus comodo free version for me.

I do like to see what is trying to connect to the interweb, especially when notepad.exe insists on connecting for example.

Yeah, it's in the same legislation as outlawing French.

I may have to go back on what I said.

Came home to Jnr moaning his PC is slow, seems he’s managed to download Chromium Malware, Defender didn’t detect it, won’t remove it.

ESET is currently doing the biz though.

Does Jnr not have a non-admin user account?

PS you can't stop malware that is 'in' something else - you know what kids are like for clicking stuff. It's more 'educating them' about what to click.

My nephew kept trashing the home PC all the time. Eventually he learnt.

No Jnr does not have an admin account.

I’ve got rid now, downloaded ESET from my admin account and it removed it.

I'd run MBAM as well anyway.
