Looking at upgrading an older laptop from 2000 to XP - the main reason is to allow me to use a new HP printer with it. Will it wipe the whole hard drive/remove programmes? Obviously I'll need to upgrade Office.

Any pointers or recommendations on the right way to do it? Or whether to bother at all?

Should have mentioned that XP is the Home version.

Thanks.

I just asked one of our techy guys as we run both 2000 and XP desktops. He says that it can be done and it shouldn't wipe everything but it's much easier to start from scratch and will usually mean a much smoother running XP system.

You shouldn't need to upgrade Office either.

I would always backup the system, wipe it and do a clean install when changing operating systems - when you start having problems you then can discount the whole series of questions re whether the problem is related to the fact that you did a dirty install/carried over the problem from the previous OS.

Yes, but XP is rock-solid with SP3. I wouldn't touch Vista with somebody else's barge-pole. 7 has yet to prove it's as good as MS have promised... I've heard it's pretty spot-on, but we all know MS's history... 😀

I never mentioned Vista either 🙂
But 7 does seem to be good, I use it here at home and much prefer it to XP which I'm still using at work.

Absolutely nothing wrong with Vista SP2 you just need plenty of RAM and a good graphics card to get the best out of it.

Windows 7 definitely feels nicer to use than Vista on lower spec kit but you still want more than 1Gb of Ram. It is really just Vista R2 and in my experience not yet as stable.

You won't go wrong with XP SP3 on that old kit especially if you have 1Gb of RAM but I would backup data and format the drive. You won't need to upgrade office as Office 97 or 2000 runs quite happily on XP if that is all you have.
