Quick one..got a m8 in messaging me from Europe, he's says he's dropped the laptop and the touch screen has bust/cracked (he's trying to run his business remotely). Trouble is he can't get past the 1st lock screen to login, he's used to swiping the screen, but that and none of the keys (integrated mouse) seem to be doing anything.

I don't have a Windows 8 machine to test this on.. any one got any ideas?
I'd imagine any key should get you past it but...nada

Google suggest lots of way to disable it, but no shortcut key or way to get past it...

Holding ctrl alt del together used to bring up the login prompt and tab between fields.

Can he get hold of a usb keyboard and mouse to plug into the laptop and external monitor for now

On windows 8 instead of swiping the screen up you can hit a key (any key) then log in.

If it's bust anyhow and he needs it to run his business, I'd just replace it and not worry* about it?

*possibly adding in a valuable lesson on backups...

Sounds borked to me, default on win8 is that any key or mouse click will get you passed the first page to the log-in page.

No doubt it full of his data/email.. you know the score... he runs his own business while pissing around with triathlons (actually he might just be on holiday this time but doubtful)
Yep P-Jay I agree, but as I don't use Win 8 (have fixed it) I wondered if I was missing anything obvious that could help him.

Cheers All

If the touchscreen is sending stupid signals and jamming the mouse, can't he kit a key combo to disable it? Like there's usually hotkey to disable a trackpad.

This may be possible through the BIOS, before anything gets going. You could likely use an external keyboard/mouse then too.

If he needs the data off it, it's gonna be a hard-drive pull if he's in a hurry, or just wait to repair it.

I found myself recently with a borked laptop so I bought a hard disk casing from PC World and luckily the disk was fine so I could retrieve all the lost stuff. It took quite a bit of faffing but all is now good.

I wasted quite a bit of time replacing bits of the laptop before I realised that if one bit is broken then several bits might be broken.
