Macbook Pro mid-2010 owned from new

Just lately when I close the lid instead of just sleeping the Mac actually shuts down so I have to use the power button when I want to use it again

Doesn't seem to matter if it's on battery or AC power - but it is intermittent

I've checked all the power settings and nothing has been changed

10.12.6 OS

Apple have decided you need to upgrade.

Get a new MacBook Pro with TouchID and Touch Bar. Or, check your energy settings in 'system preferences'. Though I'd hold off as Mac OS High Sierra will be out in a couple of weeks and that might adjust things a bit for you anyway.

Usual thing with Mac is to reset the PR first:

https://macpaw.com/how-to/fix-macos-sierra-problems

"How to reset SMC on your Mac notebook:

Shut it down. Plug the power cord in. Press Shift-Control-Option (the ones on the left of your keyboard) and power button simultaneously. Release. Now just turn on your Mac as usual.

How to reset SMC on your desktop Mac:

Shut it down and unplug it. Wait 5 seconds and then plug it back in. Wait another 5 seconds. Turn it back on."

OK. No magnets nearby? Tried this bizarre 'upside down' trick?

https://www.ifixit.com/Answers/View/99207/MacBook+Pro+mid+2010+boots+directly+into+sleep+mode.

I had an A1183 that did the same thing, and it was the little magnet in the lid that was the issue.

Then you'll have to buy a new one because the old one isn't compatible with your ring main anymore.

I am not surprised, a bit of snake oil

Have a search on support forums or macrumors - my money is on a Systems Preference setting somewhere, as above power save. Never had the problem so can't give a definitive solution. As for changing machiens I put more ram and an ssd into a friends 2006 or 7 Mac Book Pro, she's still very happily using it as am I my 2009 Mini

jambalaya

I am not surprised, a bit of snake oil

It fixes a surprisingly high number of issues.....and there's nothing in Sys Pref that would cause JG's issues.

Anyway, james- try this command from the CLI-

pmset -g

and post it back here.....

I spend a good two hours wondering why a macbook was going to sleep 10 seconds after I opened the lid. Eventually realised that it was sitting on top of my old one, so the magnets in the lower laptop were convincing the upper one that I had shut the lid...

All looks normal to me- apart from disksleep. Its interesting that disk sleep is 0- that disables it.

Try this:

sudo pmset disksleep 10

Probably an SSD setting..?

I've had this on and off (if you'll excuse the pun) with a 2011 MacBook Air for the last few years. It seemed to come and go with OSX updates, which had me thinking it was software, but since I had the battery replaced a couple of months ago it's not done it again. If yours is on the original battery it might be worth a look?

Think I've fixed it

I noticed that intermittently the mac was not seeing any RAM in the 2nd slot

Loosened the screws in the RAM holder and that seems to have stopped the problem

Suspect there was some overheating/no room for expansion going on

That last reply James may indicate a failing solder joint somewhere on the logic board. You may want to check through a search that there isn't a known issue on your model. (It's a pain if there is, it's what did for my old G5 machine and that was the ram slots being old and the joints failing).
