Do kids go for the "I'm not sleepy" trick for the first time in ages, on the one occasion when we're trying to go out for the evening. Reservation in 20 minutes, currently sat at the top of the stairs considering chloroform as an option for my son...

You probably shouldn't be leaving then home alone if they're that young

Hope you're not going for a meal, unless you want sub-standard fare.
Monday nights are traditionally chef's night off.

On the contrary, kids need to learn to deal with parents not being there all the time and not being centre of the universe.
Head out and have a great evening.

My dad told me about "The night we realised you were a keeper". They wanted to do something else, it was bedtime, I said "I'm not sleepy". They said "Well, sometimes you have to do things you don't really want to, to help other people". So I said OK and went to bed.

If I have kids, there had better be some karmic payback for that!
